Doing 500 mile oil change on TX750 that was rebuilt by previous owner. The side oil filter was old and full of metal so trashed it and ordered a new one and gasket. The large bolt that holds it in place is straightforward, but the spring and ball followed by all thread is confusing. Obviously can't torque against a spring, so just screw all thread in flush and put the cover on? I may be over thinking this, just want to be sure I'm doing it correctly. Thanks

The bolt needs to be tight enough to get the filter to seal against its gasket, without caving in the filter from over-torquing it. The ball/spring is the bypass valve, opens when the filter is clogged to keep from starving the top end of oil.

That makes sense, I screwed it in just slightly past flush on the large bolt so it can't contact the cover. The old filter had quite a bit of fine metal in it, will be interesting to see whats in the new filter in a thousand miles.

If there was quiet a bit of fine metal in the filter, I don't think I'd go 1000 miles before checking again. if it was me, I'd have a look in 2-300 miles just to be on the safe side.
