happy new year i have a properly operating used tach coming for my 75 xs650 to replace the slow as molasses original one the replacement has what appears to be dust on the face i have read that a squirt of silicone spray in the light socket holes will help lube the innards as well as give face a fresher look what say ye?

The link below shows a 76-83 bezel removal
74/75 are the same, the housing is metal not plastic

Honestly, if it is dust the only way I would do it is remove the bezel and clean the glass.
Leave the unit in a sunny place for an hour or so to remove any moisture from the inside of the Speedo/tach. Reassemble.

Not hard just need to take the time, be gentle and follow the instructions.

A couple of different ways, (or I shout say with different instruments, same procedure), to actually remove the bezel but the most important thing is to leave about an inch untouched. This is so the reassembly makes sure the housing is bedded back on the bezel to get a good seal.
Again slow increments in the removel and installation is the secret.
Glue the light tubes in place or the vibration when reinstalling the bezel, (my way), or they could fall off

My tech is slow ... but accurate.... so I am assuming that it has to to be disassembled and a lighter lube .... as stated I think there is info on that.
I had to disassemble my Speedo for a loose face plate and it went well and looks good.... so don't be hesitant to give it a go.
I am thinking doing anything without disassembling will be a less than satisfactory.

Yeah no for spraying in silicone I SUSPECT it will just make a foggy mess of the back side of the glass. The paint on the gauge face is a delicate flat black mixing that with silicone will get really ugly.
A slow gauge you can TRY setting it upright in hot sun or other say 100F area for a couple hours.
Like skull points to there are several overhaul how to's replacement face decals are available. I don't think there's any short cut to a good working gauge though I have had a slow when it came out of the barn gauge "self heal" after a few hundred miles.

I believe someone has recommended removing one of the bulbs, and use a little bit cotton or similar, lightly soaked in "white spirit" stuffed in the bulb holder, keeping the tacho or speedo oriented upright all the time, and leaving it in the sunshine (or equivalent warm environment) for a couple of days. Then remove the cotton. The idea is that a tiny amount of the white spirit will evaporate from the cotton, and free up/ "lube" the mechanism without creating a mess or ruining anything. Obviously this will not remove any dust or other contamination.
Spraying ANY liquid into a speedo or tacho is a nono!

what are you guys using for the gasket or packing or whatever you want to call it between the instrument holder cup and the instrument? not the one that goes over the bezel the tach that's coming saturday does not have it and the one on my original tach is toast

This is what I did -

thanks for the many good ideas i live in a log home last year we had major work done on it one of these was recaulking between the logs the contractor left behind some black closed cell foam strips that i think will work with the help of some silicone will give it a shot in a day or so........happy new year

oh do the prongs in the cup lip go on either side of the nubs on the bracket? cup seems tight fit when i put it back in bracket PS i did a quick trial if the log cabin caulking strips and they will work great

Stumbled upon the following post by no less than grizld1. Maybe this is where Henry28NCT got the idea from?

What's worked for me is to remove one of the drive retaining screws on the back of the clock and hose down the internals with DuPont Teflon and silicone spray; might take a couple of applications, but that stuff will free up the instrument very nicely. It'll coat the inside of the glass, but most of that runs off and what's left dries pretty clear.
From this 2010 thread, if anyone's interested...
