Slipping gear? Maybe bad valve adjustment?

Is the choke getting stuck open? Sounds like my bike would run w enricher on? Check intake boots for air leeks? Vacuum barb cover come off? Once the bike is warmed up if you don't see or feel obvious air leaks, I believe guys spray carb cleaner over the possible dry crack boot and listen for change.

YES... Early in one of your posts you said the engine revs rise but you only go 45 or 50 mph. Quit overthinking it. Perhaps setting your valves correctly gave you even more power and the clutch cannot handle more power when it is not adjusted CORRECTLY. Road speed and engine revs are a linear function of the gear ratio. When that function becomes non linear your clutch is slipping (or your sprockets are shot. NO other explanation. Period.

I thought I did the adjustment for a slipping clutch but maybe the video wasn’t right for my bike. I loosened up the cable up top and loosened the nut at the bottom and used a Philip screwdriver to adjust the tension by feeling when it hits a point and setting it as soon as I feel tension.

Ok so the bike was off timing but I got it tuned in. But I still run into the same problem high revs in high gears. I still have torque and power to go faster but the bike is just reving extremely high. I added a picture of the advance if anyone can see anything wrong with it. I see the return spring is pretty beat up but should I go back to valves now that it’s timed?
No it doesn’t occur when shifting its almost as if I’m not shifting at all… my rpm’s don’t come down when shifting… well they do just not as much as they should. The difference between second and third is literally next to nothing. When shifting from second to third the rpm’s drop maybe 100-300

My most recent job was adjusting the valves. The bike was riding great but I would hear constant valve chatter which I thought was due to my valves being too loose. After adjusting the valves and triple checking if I got my specs right (.004 intake and .006 exhaust) I still run into this same problem. it sounds like a clanking mess and the bike revs around 3-4k in gears 3,4 and 5 even though I’m going max 40mph. I’ve heard this could be dude to a slipping clutch. But it’s hard for me to believe that’s the issue because it ran perfectly find until I messed with the valves. Any thoughts on what could be the issue?

All say Slipping clutch. Take a good read through the tech section
also look at your clutch cable for dragging. :twocents:

Is he running the correct type of oil?
Specifically for wet clutch operation; to eliminate slippage under load.

I’ll post a better video what all would yall like to see on this video? It’s hard because I don’t have a GoPro and have to use my phone to record. I’m working a ton now and sorry for the late responses but I don’t have time to look at the bike till Saturday.

I’m for sure running the correct oil. I have no additives in it either it’s Castrol 20w-50 used 2 and a half quarts. The container says it’s specifically made for 2 stroke motorcycle engines.

I also want to add a big thank you all for all the help and recommendations! I never thought I would be able to perform these jobs before and this forum has provided a lot of support and knowledge! I apologize if I come off a bit frustrated and rushed. I have had to call in some favors to borrow vehicles from friends to get to work and I hate smooching off people.😅

Hope that's a typo... should be specifically for 4 stroke motorcycle engines (which is what I suspect it is). 20W-50 would 4-stroke motor oil. A 2 stroke would have gear oil for its transmission and specific oil for its oil-injection system or its premix.

I make an exception for my wife. Otherwise, I’m not doing any smooching.

Was most definitely a type-o😂.

This is the exact oil I used.

Your XS is a four stroke motor not 2 stroke. . And needs oil specific to a wet clutch application. You seem to be out of your depth with these old motors.

I'm surprised no one else is thinking possible air leek at intake. Symptoms sound spot on..

Ok ya if it's definitely a clutch which makes sense now. I had to slow down. Ya high revs and not showing mph increases does sound like slipping.....

That’s exactly what I think! I’ve been reading a ton on people with similar bikes to the xs and everyone seems to be pointing to air leak! The vacuum lines on my carb have slipped off before and have had a similar effect on the bike but I didn’t want to fiddle with them in fear of messing up something else.

And ya I know that’s why I’m reaching out for help😂 I’m a broke college student who doesn’t get spoiled by my parents so I had to work my way to buying my form of transportation. A simple you did this wrong would suffice.
