Oil down a valve guide is a possibility. Perhaps a VG seal isn't seated properly. I don't remember if you can see the seals thru tappet cover. Worth a look.About 500 miles ago I did a topend rebuild. Everything done right. Valve seals, rings, timing chain, everything. Now I get a puff of smoke from the left side when I start it. 1971 xs1-b 650. Any ideas why?
I didn't do anything with the guides.I couldn't feel any play in them.No mention of Valve Guides Serviced .

Smoke goes away after start, correct?
This could help. Maybe a seal is damaged.
That was my first thought as well, I know you said you installed new valve seals, but that’s where my suspicions would lie.
I like the way you think! I really don't want to tear this apart again. It's just a short puff of smoke, and then it's gone. Doesn't seem to be using any oil. I've done one oil change since the rebuild.500 miles aee..hh Thinking out loud Positive Thinking
Maybe it is the seal rather than ..guide
If it is rebuilt
Can consider about driving for a while longer to see if it changes I admit it can be borderline reality distortion
But it happens .. Seals needs some oil on them and a couple of heat cycles.
That is why they good bad .To little use for to long time -- dry up .. There are tight play in the guides
Maybe the valves have been flipped .going in to the other side
Check so there is Valve Play.
Assuming compression is good And no strange sounds Spark Plug reasonable correct A little smoke for a while .. I would consider doubling up those 500 miles .And then reevaluate
If it's just the single puff when starting and no other indications of a problem, I'd just let it be.I really don't want to tear this apart again. It's just a short puff of smoke, and then it's gone. Doesn't seem to be using any oil. I've done one oil change since the rebuild.
I'm inclined to agree. If it's serious, it's going to become more obvious in the next thousand miles or so.If it's just the single puff when starting and no other indications of a problem, I'd just let it be.
If it was a wrist pin clip, your rings would be about half destroyed by now.... with constant smoking and a loss of power on that cylinder. Nasty stuff that. Doesn't sound like your problem. Your "problem" doesn't sound like a problem. Jus' go for a ride and enjoy it.

Last engine I built was a 5.0 Ford in 2001 and it always smoked a little at start up. It bugged the crap out of me for a while before my natural aversion to work took over and I just let it be. No regrets. If it's just the single puff when starting and no other indications of a problem, I'd just let it be.
