snort'n Norton, the pointless? thread

There is a guy in Washington who can rebuild your clocks. Does great work but he has a "Real job"and it takes time. You can contact him at g.poirier.ohc@att.net. He has done several for me.
Check and see if the stud that is next to the pushrod tunnel has broken through. Easy enough to fix if that is the problem. I had one on a bike I bought with low mileage. I first thought that there was a head gasket leak but that wasn't the case it was a casting flaw and when they drilled and tapped the hole it broke into the pushrod tunnel. Good thing I bought 2 head gaskets.
If you want to you can contact me off list at Norton_je@yahoo.com
Cheers
John
The clocks are working OK. In fact it was all working OK until I touched it, downhill from there.

Looked like the glass on the tach was broken. The Smiths clocks need a bit of lube every once in a while. Trouble is you have to dismantle them to get it done.
And you need a special tool to remove and install the glass and quality rims to replace the old rim once you get it off.

Glass in the plctures are OK. if the event ever reared its ugly head, there is a man local to me who restores these particular Smiths Magnetic instruments.

2 stroke , ehh, read about the Norton 5 stroke.

@Mailman

Ha! I remember that story well, when it was first published. He dodged a bullet there. I can totally relate, it’s a hard thing to admit that you are not the athletic young man that your ego keeps saying you are. It kills me that I struggle with long rides these days, rides I wouldn’t have thought twice about when I was younger. I take off on a ride that will keep me out 4-6 hours , and on the road to my destination I feel great! This is fun! Then I turn around to go home and after an hour, my back hurts, my neck hurts, I’ve got a headache. How much longer till I get home? Sometimes I think , “It’s this old bike, it’s a harsh ride.” “Maybe a nice new , smooth running bike would take me where I want to go!” But then I have to admit, it’s not the old bike, it’s the old man riding it! o_O

carbs, valve covers off, dribbled in a bit of gas and started kicking. about the 3rd kick BRRRM!
Try it again, now I'm limping a bit.
I think it's going to have to be off with it's head. Have to :umm: a bit more, but likely will button it up, clean and polish a few things, trundle it out to the shed. Other projects before this one on the list.

Can anyone correlate 2 stroke ownership to emergency room visits? I have four brothers. Four of us five have at least 1 visit/ 2 stroke:D

Hi tW,
it's a secondary effect.
Most motorcycle-related emergency room visits involve falling off of slow speed dirt bikes, which are mostly 2-strokes.
Same deal as most ambulance rides to the morgue involve falling off of high speed road bikes, which are mostly 4-strokes.

I have had only 2 rides. 1976-A pontiac station wagon when a silver tank Elsinore 125 landed on me and my Suzuki DS90 (why were we going in opposite directions on the same jump?) and 1980- a brand new '80 Javelin when a high speed tank slapper (straight desert road, Yuma AZ) sent me tumbling and sliding at 80+ mph.

My 70 Norton backfired and the whole instep of my right foot was bruised. Like getting hit with a cannon ball. Timing was off just a bit.
Got 4 projects going. 76 XS650, 74 Mk2A Norton Commando, 53 C11 BSA, and a 58 Motobecane Mobylette (moped). It's a sickness.

This is a contagious thread - makes me want to get another project! Bookend Nortons gggGary - pretty cool I must say. I've never even sat on one, and haven't been around too many at all. Learning about all these different bikes from all of you guys with various bikes is one of my favourite things about this forum. Endless motorbike porn!

Varity is the spice of life. What bike am I going to ride today? Life is to short not to have fun. I picked up this old dealers sign years ago.

Put air in the cylinder through the plug hole, snooped with a stethoscope I swiped from Allison (horse doctoring), and the exhuast valve is the major culprit now.
current project; making an exhaust nut spanner. (wrench to the x-colonists) ;)
next up; remove exhaust and scrub exhaust valve seat.
