As found on my new project XS1B.
Twin cable twistgrip assembly with adjustable friction damper.
It has "Germany" cast into it, so I'm assuming that it isn't the original Yamaha equipment.
So exactly what should I have here ?

I would say that era of technology is pretty old, and very interesting. I can't guess it.

Looks like maybe a vintage Magura, and amazingly they're still available.
There's some sort of spring clip missing which I think locks the cable outers in place, but I won't be bothering TBH.
Now I know it's aftermarket, I'll try to track down the correct Yamaha parts instead.

Found this in a box of (supposedly) XS1 bits.
Still doesn't look very Japanese, although the screws look hopeful.
At least it has a clip to retain the cable outers
Am I getting any warmer ?

I'm actually looking for something very similar to these. Its a twist grip throttle that will accept 2 cables but it doesn't pull them both in the same direction. Twist it in the normal direction and it opens the throttle but twist it backwards and it closes the throttle and opens a compression release. They were made for flat track 2-stroke race bikes by a company called PROTRACO. I had one on a bike back in 1977 but the bike was stolen. Have you got a photo of what is under the two holes at the end of the plastic tube ?
