Hi all, I am going to do a order for parts and had a specific question. I orderded both the clymer manual and Yamaha XS650 engine manual, but now need to get some parts. For changing the oil I was instructed to get conventional 20w-50 or rotella 15w-40, and to drop the sum plate to check for damage. While there I should replace both oil filter gaskets right? I am also going to order a UNI Air filter - https://www.amazon.com/Filter-Strai.../B001IWUZ8G/ref=pd_lpo_2?tag=usdeexplicits-20 - Is Straight Mount / 2-1/4" X 4 the generally used size?

Once these are on I am going to see how it runs and adjust carbs if needed and then move onto rebuilding forks/fixing the clutch

Also is there a way to diagnose the clutch when I pull it in its hard to pull and gives power weirldy

Thank you for all of the help and advice!

20W-50, 4-stroke, motorcycle specific, non-synthetic oil.
For cleaning UNIs use only soapy water -- UNI has videos on how to clean their filters, but basically, gently work soapy water into filter, rinse, and air dry -- do not squeeze.
You will need to repair the sump filter, lots of threads on this Forum, try looking in the Tech section at the top of the page.
Lots of threads on fixing hard clutch pull. You probably need a new cable, among other things.

There are threads in Tech on clutch adjustment. You might need a new cable, route it correctly to avoid sharp bends and adjust carefully - it's finicky but not difficult. Getting that right will make the bike much nicer to ride.

If it won't adjust or still feels weird it is just possible the clutch has been assembled wrongly, as mine was, see https://www.xs650.com/threads/miss-november-xs2-tribute.55057/post-608332

You can cut gaskets for the sump plate and other places from gasket paper - I do it for fun rather than saving money.

As hinted at above, the sump filter has issues - it's liable to split, but can be DIY strengthened. Or you can do as I did and replace with a spin-on filter?

Your bike has the BS38 carbs so the UNI filter you want is the UP4200, not the 4229 you've linked to. The 4200 has a 2" mounting flange I.D. and fits the BS38s like a glove. You'll need two, one for each carb. You don't need the one with the red "sock" cover, the plain black one is fine, and it costs a few dollars less as well. You also don't need/want the special foam filter oil they sell. It's too thick and can clog them. Just use a 50-50 mix of gas and motor oil.

Ok great that was what I found when I looked further into the forums and I ordered 2 UP4200-AST, which I think are just shorter. Wish I would’ve known about the black ones being cheaper lol.

I also ordered replacement gaskets for the sump plate and upper oil filter and will update with pictures how they look when I can change the oil.

I am going to blast the filters with carb cleaner that seems to be the correct method, but correct me if I am wrong.

I wish I had the skill to cut my own gaskets, but props to you for being good enough to do it.
I am going to order a new clutch cable, I heard the Mikes xs ones were bad and they there is another website and will buy it there, and proceed after it’s replaced.

Yes, new cables come practically dry and need to be oiled before install. The 1st one I replaced pulled harder than the old one because I didn't oil it, lol. You can just use motor oil. Hang the cable and dribble a couple drops at a time into the top until it comes out the bottom ......

That spray cable lube is too thin and only works for a few days.
