If you do try squeezing the clip, put a drill bit in the clip and tape two of them to the vise jaws. That will bend it at the straight sections. The horseshoe section (at the bottom of the diagram) has been known to crack if you just try to squeeze it down. This will prevent that.

Are you supposed to bend the clip while attached to the gear? I tried bending mine once while off the gear and boogered it up.

Off the gear. Kinda like this..

And when reinstalling it, place one side in the groove on the gear then carefully spread it open just enough to snap the other side on and down into place. Don't insert it from the side, that can spread it open too much and negate the tightening you just did.
