Hi all. First post but been reading a lot!
Got a 1980 xs650 for $50 at a flea market but it was in boxes. Been putting the motor together but still some bolts missing.
I need the starter gear box bolts but no idea what size. Any and all help would be appreciated. Just wanna hit the hardware store and grab em.
I am putting the starter on as I won’t be the only one riding.

Correct. About the only thing Yamaha didn't break down is the thread pitch. But for smaller stuff such as your 6mm's damn near all hardware stores just carry the one pitch.... fine.... which is what Yamaha used.
You'll still want to take care threading the first one in though, just to be absolutely sure it's the correct pitch.
Cheers.

If you're needing quiet a bit of hardware, look up Bolt Depot and/or McMaster Carr. Both have quality hardware for pennies on the dollar compared to the hardware stores.
Just a for instance.... a $1 bolt at the store costs about 5-10 cents at Bolt Depot. Shipping isn't free, so you need to order over about 20 bucks worth to make it worth your while.

One other thing I'll add.... these bikes are pushin' 40-50yrs old. Don't treat the threads like they're brand new. If the book calls for 10ft-lbs, I'll go about 8.
Not sure of your experience level, so not trying to talk down to you, just thought I'd point that out.

Thank you, I wouldn’t take it as talking down to, though I can see some might consider it as such.
I’m a blacksmith by hobby and a meathead in life so hammer it home might be something to warn me against for sure.
This is kind of a redemption project as someone carelessly sealed the fate of the xs650 I had when I was younger so I would like to do it right and I am doing it by the book (xs650.com) and taking my time.

Thank you for the welcome. I haven’t downloaded the factory manual. I have a Clymer but find it lacking so I will soon be looking for better I think.
Some pics so far. Things are coming together, not assembled just painted. Waiting on some more VHT satin as they don’t seem to have any local.
The pic in the suv is coming home and the the box was full at one point just not full of “all” the parts lol.

Here's the Yamaha manual. It says it includes the '80 supplement, but it doesn't. I've included that and the parts manual.
