Put my starter gear train back together and the starter would not spin, checked voltage and it was decent and the starter seemed to be bound up. Removed the #4 gear train and starter still bound up. Removed the gears that mesh with starter motor and start motor spins freely when cranked. I worked the two starter gears back into place (had to wiggle the small gear on the cross shaft to get gears to seat fully. Put cover on and tried starter and it spins small gear on shaft, BUT after several tries it quit spinning small gear, not locked up just would not engage. I have the wavy washer, but it seems the collar 90387-12093-00 is missing and it holds the gears in engagement. With out the collar the gears can back off and thus the small gear stops spinning. The collars are available NOS on Ebay for fairly cheap. Am I diagnosing this correctly, if I get the collar should everything be back in good working order? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have zero knowledge of TX650 internals and my online shop manual is not much help. Thanks

I see this is from September. Did you solve your problem? What's up? I just replaced my starter gear with a 75. Mine's a 72. Our bikes are identical except for the front end. I had to pull the small gear off to get the starter gear back in and the shaft came out slightly and caused the larger gear inside to slip off. After kicking myself over and over and over, I dove into it and calmly got the gear back on without pulling the bottom end.

It was a long battle, but I got the entire starting system either repaired or replaced (had gear damage from when it blew up) and it now works fine, BUT now the starter itself is working only intermittently so on the next oil change I'm planning on dropping the starter and having it rebuilt locally.

Glad you got it fixed. aS FOR THE STARTER MOTOR, darn caplocks, when you pull it, you may want to try connecting it straight to a battery, just to rule out any bad switches or relays on your bike. I picked up my 72 in 76 with about 4K miles. Shortly after I got it the starter motor stopped working. When I got around to it, I found the starter was rusted. Somehow, water got in. Well, I used to wash it alot and I also road in the rain alot. It worked, but I only used it in emergencies, then after about 5K miles it stopped working again. So, I kicked started it for about 50K miles, then put it away in 1989. Ok, this is taking way too long, in 2014, I got it back on the road. The starter motor at that time was so loose, the bearings were just rattled apart.
Moral of the story, there is none, I bought another starter on Ebay for about $35. I took a chance, but I've put about 30K on it and use it all the time beacuase I'm either too old or too lazy to kick it. More like too weak!

Gosh Gary, it's 29 degrees here in Georgia, It's gotta be f@cking like the North Pole where you are!

Ride safely, gentlemen! (And ladies)

I hear you on kicking these beast. I'm actually legitimately old (71) and the only way I can kick start mine is on the center stand. That's not too much of an issue at home or in a parking lot, but if it ever dies at a red light I'm going to look pretty silly and may not be the safest way to operate. While the 650 is no Harley its weight if definitely in the major pig class to me. I'd love to swap it for a nice RD350, but their prices are out of my range or they're complete turds. Guess when I get too weak I'll have to get a TW200 or a Honda monkey (still beats walking) :)

Getting back to kickin! In my 20's, kick starting from the sidestand was a natural occurrence. I didn't even think about it. At this point in my life with a hip replacement on the horizon, kicking it is not 1st on my list. Hopefully, I'm confident that I fixed the started gear spring and I will be using the starter 99.9% of the time!
