Ive got a 79 XS special, and Im on the lookout for a starter assembly first. My bike was modified when I bought it in 09 and the starter was removed, so Ive been kickstarting it ever since. I need the starter, and any associated parts to make it work. Not sure how the system works, so I dont know if there is gearing or such that was also removed.
Second, Id like a set of handlebars that allow me to sit more upright. Not sure what I need, but probably a stock set of handlebars, or something close.
Im located in north Alabama, so if there are any members close that would be preferred, but Ill pay shipping for the right parts.

Thanks,
Chris

I’m curious about how many components were removed from your 79 to make it kick only ?
My own 79 has all the starter components but I’m considering making it just kick only.
So can you provide pics? You do need to know how much has been removed.
Starter only and wiring is easy.
What is plugging the hole your starter originally filled ?

So, looks like the builder just used an expanding plug to fill the hole, top notch, lol. Guess it works. I'll pull it out and take a look inside sometime soon. Would you be interested in selling your starter? I'd offer to throw in my plug, but you'd probably want a new one! PM me if so.

Expanding plug. Doesn’t get simpler eh ? I’ll bet all the related components are still in your engine cases.
One, my starter is not confirmed to work. Two, it’s heavy to send across the USA,
I’ll bet you can find one locally.

Third, Id like a set of handlebars that allow me to sit more upright. Not sure what I need, but probably a stock set of handlebars, or something close.
Stock handlebars are plentiful but more often bent than not. I just put this on a Special:

I can sit bolt upright. Switchgear, grips, brake all fit. Before that, US market Triumph T120 bars work. 8” rise, upright seating. A tight fit for Yamaha switchgear.

Marty,
Thanks for the tip. I'll consider those options, looks like that ebay link set would work great. However, I'm hoping for something for a little less $$$. I'd swap someone my bars if anyone wanted them.

This is all Ive found on the Emgo catalog. Ive got to measure mine and see what Ive got currently.

It should look like this:

My hands are still well below my heart, so they aren’t going numb.

I haven’t found you a cheap option, but you now have an Emgo part number. The knurl is going to show under the clamps. It’s slightly more narrow than XS650.

Emgo also makes a Yamaha Special replica. The bends are more abrupt than the original. I wear them with the grips low and I’m good. The 8” rise bars from the Triumph give a less crowded feel.

I’m almost positive I have at least 1 maybe 2 starters. Let me dig through my stuff and test them. I’ll shoot you a PM.

I have handlebars available. If they are the size you desire, just pay S&H and they are yours.

I also have these taller handlebars. They came off a Magna cruiser so they are definitely more swept back too.
