Still not starting.....

I should have mentioned that the locator pins are both at the top (the one I took out is in the same position as the one I did not remove) and also that the lines line up on the advance side as per this screen shot

Been thinking about it perhaps I was wrong ..apologize if so

But looking at that
https://www.xs650.com/threads/how-to-index-the-auto-advance-unit.11409/

The picture I assume is in resting not rotating it appears that the spring have retarded until the weight it hit the part with the arrow
But the barb is still in contact with the left edge of the slot
When rotating a little it immediately starts advancing rotating the thing with the arrow -- with the barb

You dont have that in you picture it is not in contact with the left edge of the slot

Maybe the engine can start and weights move but there is play it wont advance immediately
Not retarded ?

Is the advance rod lubricated so the springs can retard and advance properly

They will always both be aligned but if you put them back in 180 out with TDC the point firing sequence is reversed.

Thanks, but I only took one pin out and put the one I took out in the same position as the one that I dod not take out

Thanks, I will have a look

I have checked again and everything lines up as per this photo

oops-

But as mentioned I have checked and removed the advance again. They sit high, but do seem to move without issue (as far as I can see) I do not know why they still sit a bit high. The locking ring is tight.

The locator pins are 100% in line with each other.

The advance lines line up when compared to the 'as it should be' photo.

I know that the advance arms are not sitting correctly- even if things are not sat quite right here surely this will not cause it to

only run when the leads are crossed over
?

Don't think the advance arms could make the difference.
At this point the only suggestion I can think of is that they must have been 180 out to start with, BUT check the orange & grey wires from the points go into the correct coils. Grey wire (from top point) should be connected to the RH coil and orange (from bottom point) should go to the LH coil. If so then previous OP had it 180 out and swapped over the wires to "fool it". Thats about all I can think of

Thanks Tiggertoo, I will have a look but the bike didn't have this problem before and was running well.

Definately something wrong with the counterweights
#2); going off the counterweight lugs, and how #1, #3 fill their respective gaps. It looks like the rod needs to move in the direction of the arrow to centre it.

#3); lug fill the gap
#1); hardly goes into the gap

Still on the lugs. Left lug looks like it will jam. Sharp edge of the cam, ( for the want of a better word) will catch on the edge of the lug.

Right weight lug is hardly sitting in the cam hole. The whole weight needs to, slide down and twist , a little to set it properly.
This pic it is easier to see how the lugs are misaligned for their respective cam holes.
It looks like it needs to move in the direction of the yellow arrow. Previous pic

Whatever the reason, this needs sorting.

Could b bent posts??? But that doesn't explain why the right side isn't seated properly

Thanks, Ill take it apart again, you are right it doesn't look right. But the mystery of why it only runs when the leads are crossed over. The pins are correct, as mentioned I only took on out and put it in the same as the other...
