Tanks on eBait

I've seen multiple tanks from india for sale, but I haven't seen any recent reviews. All the ones I can find are from 10yrs ago saying they are crap. I'd like to see current reviews.

Loók nice, also see they have chrome on steel ones for $40 less.

2 things come to mind.

1, Why a Special and not a Standard tank

2, sunlight refection off the tank will b a pain in the but. At certain angles to the sun, the gauges are problematic enough. Wouldn't consider the tank on that basis

I bought a triumph tank about 5 years ago. It was ROUGH.

Heavy as a boat anchor, wobbles all over, deep grinder marks, emblem holes different side to side.

It was a primed tank.

On the ones pictured I’d imagine the welds are rough but if they mount right they would probably fly.

Yeah. I've been looking at the norton manx style tanks, but haven't brought myself to buy anything. I can buy a nice handmade one from the UK for $1k+, or one from India for $400 or a little less. But I've read where they were rough, assymetrical, wouldn't fit, or just never received. So while tempting without current reviews I'm leaning towards just coughing up the big bucks for a known quality tank.

I believe @gggary bought a set of Norton tins and was happy with them for what he paid.

Just know what’s under all that paint haha.

Yeah, it might not hurt to buy one of the cheap repop tanks just to get going, then later switch to a nicer tank. Since I'm doing the cb750in a featherbed I might have to movethe petcock, possibly reshape the underside for clearance etc. If I did that and decided to get a better tank later it could atleast have the petcock in the right spot rather than need modification.

I bought a Norton Interstate tank from India. It was rubbish.

From the British bike side of things, I have spoke to multiple guys who have purchased Indian made Norton and BSA repo tanks and side covers.

The quality varies wildly from acceptable to complete unusable garbage.

Typically consensus is to purchase unfinished as they will need some minor tweaking / body work to make fit.

It really comes down to who is manufacturing and the quantity of good ratings on eBay.

Half those ratings are bought and paid for. The BSA bits were from an Indian company with a 99% rating... good, no?
No. I left a shitty rating (with pics) on their Ebay feedback page. Said their stuff was junk. They contacted me and offered a 25% refund if I'd change it to a positive rating. Told 'em to piss off, but those feedback ratings ain't worth nothin' these days. And that ain't the first time it's happened to me.
Buying from India is a roll of the dice.

Good to know Jim.

I hadn’t purchased, just spoken with a bunch of Commando owners.

One had to cut open a tank to repair a leak for a customer and found the tank was made out of approx. 20+ different sections welded together. It was actually shocking it didn’t leak more.

The same individual ordered a chromed BSA tank and the fit and finish were damn near perfect.

My good buddy ordered a set of interstate side covers. 1/2 the mounts were great the others needed to be cut and re-welded.

As you say, it really is a crap shoot.

I bought one from him for a 1990 yz125 build. You get what you pay for. They begin to build your tank after you complete the purchase. It took me 1 month from purchase to actual receipt date. Might have taken longer if I didn’t message him for updates after the first week went by and asked for tracking and additional pics of the tank.

The petcock holes are off center. Also many the fairing holes ended up off center. probably would not recommend to someone on here unless only option or last option.

Indian parts; I bought from a company that had an English speaking rep in Seattle. cuz I was trying to get a specific paint color and design.
The Commando tins I bought were just test fitted (some issues) and seem to be keeping the box they are in from collapsing just fine.
Let's be kind and just say the paint wasn't Jim quality. May look at them closer some day.
Got squared on a headlight I bought from India it was NOT what was in the description. ship it back we'll replace they said HAH, shipping was more than the cost of the part FleeceBay was no help. Caveat Emptor.

Yeah, this thread is going about the same as others I've read. Maybe 1-2 people saying it was OK for the cost while the rest got garbage. under $400 for a lyta sprint style tank seems good, especially since the british made ones are $1k+. But if you end up buying an expensive one later because the India made piece was crap it's not worth it. the only reason I'd consider it is I might have to modify the tank, and that would give me a pattern.
