I'm new to the forum, and been slowly getting a 1980 xs650 up and running. I have all new electrical, fresh battery, VM34's, and a CDI system (Hugh Handbuilt only, no other additions or ignition advance).

The bike starts no problem (kick and electric), though idles pretty rough. I've tuned carbs to the point where I can idle and check timing, and haven't ridden much on the road until I can get it running better. I went back this past weekend to confirm I've installed the CDI correctly, and followed Hugh's updated instructions.

I was originally off on my TDC, though I made a piston stop and confirmed TDC, tightened the flywheel according to instructions with the proper timing gap, and took a video of the timing while it was running. The bike had been idling for around 10 minutes before, and dies during the video:

My timing mark is always at 'TDC' with the timing light, no amount of adjustment seems to change this position towards 'advanced'. I've confirmed I'm getting good voltage from my electrical system. My cam chain adjustment has been checked. I've also messaged Hugh for any insight. I realize that this could be related to a number of other issues (carb/fuel/spark/compression/valve adjustment), though want to make sure I'm not missing something simple.

I've been learning a ton from these forums, thanks to all who post and help newbies like me.

Thanks,

Kale
