Finally finished my US import XS2, many thanks to Mailman and his excellent XS2 restro thread. I came across most of the issues that Mailman had and also had a low milage 5k mile bike. New top end due to corrosion in one cylinder. This site has been a fantastic source of knowledgeable people especially for me 5 twins and Jim. I’ve installed a Boyer ignition as it’s now a UK bike (Cardiff Wales) and hopefully if it goes wrong will have some backup.
Two questions if I may,
1. I’ve installed a home made drip tank to collect the oil from the two breather tubes, I know that Mailman downsized his breathers and later bikes have only one output and I’ve reduced the two tubes via a brass y splitter into a 1/4 inch feed to the drip container. There’s plenty of holes in the top of the container but will the 1/4 inch be big enough to release enough pressure from the engine?
2. Again like Mailman with the original BS 38 carbs ( twin throttle cables) the sliders take about three second to drop when Air holes are covered. On the later BS 38s it takes about 15 seconds for the sliders to drop and there are plenty of Utube videos showing the later Carbs taking much longer. Although the carbs are not yet dialled in with the air mixture they are set to the factory setting 3/4 turns and balanced with a CarbTune the bike is running at tickover quite nicely. So is the approximate 3s to drop correct for the early carbs. Cheers all.
