Top end valve sound got me concerned

didn't do a compression test before. it really ran so well that i had a lot of faith in its compression. I think i will check the valve faces and seats. gonna need some new tools for that though.
 
not sure if I have the ability to check valve faces and seats. don't have the tools nor space. being working on my bike in a garage smaller than my car with no light nor electricity. not even a table. had to squeeze 4 bikes and all my tools and parts in there. I think since I know the sound is from the cam chain guide I will replace that and clean everything off and call it a day. one day when I have a bigger garage I will do some more on the bike.

Gotta say this is the most responsive, active, and helpful group of people I've ever met on the internet. You guys really saved my ass. Thank you so much for everyone's help. I will keep you guys posted on the bike's future.
 
The sparkly bits you found in the oil are from that worn out camchain guide. The sump plate needs to come off next. Firstly to clean it, secondly to see if the strainer is damaged. They often are.

Then the side strainer needs to come off and be cleaned of sparkly bits too.

If it were mine I would be doing a couple of oil flushes and strainer cleans before I rode that bike again. To get rid of as much of the sparkly bits as possible.

The bike have about 70k miles on it and never needed a engine rebuild.
70 000 miles is 112 654.08 kilometers
I would expect twice as much ( at least ) wear at half the distance
Not many early 80 ies bikes lasting that long. But perhaps with an expert previous owner .

If it is correct there can be reason overhaul more once inside and engine taken out --For thinking out loud
Bike ran well and no other problems shifting or other wear and so

Can it be 7 k miles instead ?

Have someone do the valve seals. Any back yard mech has the tool (valve spring compresser)

and it takes about an hour to do all four, they can give the valves, guides, and seats, a quick look, go, no go, while they're doing it.
A hone and a new set of rings.................
These are "while you're this far in, might as well" recommendations.

70k seriously. the owner kept it really well. he made sure that he rides the bike a few times every year when he got old. I have heard of xs650s reaching 100k without a need for a rebuild.

i guess.....
i think ill do it myself. once i have enough money to spend. school is also starting so I need to look for a time to do this.

My first 70 000 km 45 k miles one crank bearing pitted needed replacing and the Cam bearing on left side almost in pieces
Of course not sure the mileage on the clock was correct.
Running rich soot inside but ran very well. exceptionally well all stock.
Second also had cam bearings worn, left side again
The crank can have been a crash damage accumulating
But speaking of top end noise .Inspection of cam bearings is good to do if not replace
