I know this is a XS650 site, but hoping someone can help with this. Rebuilding a '74 TX500. The oil filter that came with the bike, (the original I assume) is big enough that the stator cover would have to be removed to get it off. Should not have to loosen that cover and dont want to have to replace that gasket each time I change a filter. I cannot find the original filter for this bike anyway, nor can I find a compatible brand/part number in my searches. Anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know the thread diameter and pitch of these filters?

Would any old filter that physically fits the space and threads be acceptable?

Thanks in advance!

Removing that cover shouldn’t cause an issue with your gasket unless you use sealer on both sides. There is no oil under that cover so you should be able to re-use the same gasket many times.. IMG_3464.jpeg

Hmmmm, $53 and change for an oil filter, lol - that right there would put me off ever owning one of these. I've had about 3 of them go through my hands over the years. Two were given to me for free and the third I paid $25 for. I stripped 'em all for useful 650 parts, lol. I quite like the spoke rear wheel with the cush drive, pretty easy to adapt to the 650.

Yea that’s a lot of money for a oil filter!

Adapter plates are available to convert a TX500 to take modern filters -
