Good afternoon gentlemen; If anyone has a 76 or 77 D model with a legible Vin Tag sticker on the headstock; I've got to the stage of having my bike frame shot-blasted and powder coated and I'm nearly ready to reassemble my bike; I realised that the sticker on the steering head, the "Vin tag" was not legible nor complete; and I've noticed in threads that other members have heated the sticker with a hot air gun, and removed them prior to shotblasting and powder coating their frame.
Having removed my sticker, it's sadly in a poor state; a PO has also welded a steering lock stop over the sticker, and melted it; and I'm missing some information from it; please can anyone tell me the GAWR for the rear axle? The front axle load is 303 LBS; and the rear looks like 567 LBS; maybe 577 LBS; but too indistinct to read. My bike is a 11/1976 USA spec D model 477 - 707*** by the way; and other years may be different.
I think I have managed to identify the typeface; I believe it's called Trade Gothic Pro Bold Condensed #20, and I intend to replicate and print the sticker on vinyl once I have all the details correct. Trade Gothic looks very similar to the original typeface; I will document the process should anyone else care to replicate their stickers. obviously the serial number will be different from each bike; and different model years may have more or less information on them; but these days a computer and printer ought to make the job easy. Id also like to know the dimensions of the sticker; in millimetres please; of the box line around the typesetting; as well as the overall sticker size; and Thank you for any info you can provide!
regards
Oilslick.

Thank you for your reply 650skull; It would seem there is a difference between models; this sticker you showed is for a 1980 2F0 model; which is fine; but shows a GVWR of 935 LBS way more than the 76/77 477 model of my bike at 838 LBS! also; (mine shown below) has no tyre pressure info on it!

I guess I'll have to keep researching! or take a lucky guess; I'm going to go with 557 LBS for now; and type and print up a new headtube sticker.

Scroll down a bit. You have to supply the guy with your info. Give him whatever GVWR you want it to say.

I did a search and posted the first sticker. Now it is up to you to dig deeper

Yikes! $55.00

Don't know about the US

Here in Aus it is illegal to replace or attach, a broken or missing, vin plate. vin is stamped onto a riveted aluminium plate.

Not saying dodgy things aren't done to bypass problems. Just sometimes a little more than expected cost can b the difference between getting that frame registered or its, looking for, (and the cost), another Frame and the work involved in swapping everything over.

Thanks Skull; fortunately I'm in the UK; the frame stamping is visible and the sticker is not ( at least at the moment ) a problem. when the DVLA come to inspect the bike; if they even do; there will be a sticker visible. All I needed to find out was the actual GAWR Rear Axle loading figure, so I could get the sticker type set and printed, and the bike restoration complete.

On every motorcycle I have ever owned (including my 1979 XS 650) and that's a lot they all had the vin number actually stamped into the frame. Many of those past bikes had no stickers on them. Me thinks a plastic sticker which is susceptible to physical damage is a silly idea. Its there to provide mechanical information and that it complies with whatever codes are required by whichever government entity it falls under rather than vehicle identification.

Frames been shotblasted and powder coated and ready for collection Monday! yay.
thank you to all contributors for the information given; these forums are a godsend to the restorer!
regards All;

Headstock Sticker, it isn't perfect by any means; but it will suffice for now.

My Yamaha XS650SH has a genuine Yamaha replacement frame. The bike was totaled in 1981. I acquired the bike from a friend who bought it and bought a new frame. I have a Mississippi title now. The engine digits match the title. The frame remains unstamped.

I’m not sure what I’ll do when the time comes to transfer it.
