Urban Coyotes

I live in a town Called Gladstone, surounded by Kansas City. Every direction I look there's stop lights and freeways. But our little area was built up in the 50's. Yards are typically a little over a half acre... huge by todays standards. So it feels more rural, even if we are city dwellers. We had visitors today... a Buck and a Doe.

Seen the Doe about 6:30 making my first cup of coffee, spotted her (and the Buck) again about 10:00 in the yard to the North. It's a little after 2, and the Doe is chillin' in the yard to the East. Coming up on 8hrs of deer's frolicking and chillin' in our yards. Cool stuff!

Have never seen the coyotes around here but pretty often hear them in the woods at night. A couple years ago I was taking our Greyhound "Stretch" out for his last call around ten pm. Now he seldom barked or made any noise but this one night while I was waiting for him to do what needed doing the coyotes started their song and sounded a little close for my comfort. Well Stretch filled those big Greyhound lungs and let out one big WOOF! Just like that the night went silent! Guess the coyotes decided that anything that loud was not something they were willing to mess with! Sure miss that guy!

Not sure what "Chad" our current Greyhound will do if they come close, when you hear them off in the distance he does perk up his ears an look their way. Chad is much younger than Stretch was so time will tell!
We got em' and feral hogs too.

Wow! I’ll bet that was a surprise! My brother in law lives in a very built up suburb of Cleveland and he said that the deer have been roaming his neighborhoods for a couple of years now. He’s lived there for 30 years but this is new behavior.
Maybe loss of habitat?

Loss of habitat and a decline in hunting. 100 years of watching cartoons has finally worked.

Fwiw, I don't think hunting has declined here in Mo.
Well, except for me.... I gave it up in '16 when I had my knee replaced.
I've seen some news stories where it's been said that the number of hunting and fishing licenses has declined. Many young people today do zero things outdoors.

About 5 years ago we started seeing coyotes in our neighbourhood. At that time they were skinny, mangy looking animals. I haven’t seen a lot lately but did see one a week ago that was much larger and healthier looking and it actually looked like a small German Shepard. My wife, who walks a lot, reports that she sees them often and they are much healthier looking now. Fortunately they are still not comfortable near humans and will bolt off if they see someone.

Just remember that they are apex predators. They are smart and will kill anything they can for food. They have no natural enemies any longer and will become a huge problem just like the feral hogs we have here in the South if they aren't dealt with. Fortunately, where I live they can be expedited as pests year round, no permit required.
