Joined the forum almost 12 months ago after lurking for a short period of time, and y’all have had to put up with my sometimes inane and basic questions, in addition to my posting of things that might seem self-evident and sometimes basic/crazy/paranoid, but…I have benefited greatly from all the knowledge and generous contributions here! There is a core group of very knowledgeable people on here and who are very generous with that knowledge...you know who you are without me mentioning and/or clumsily missing the mention of a key contributor. Suffice to say a big "thanks!" to all of you.

I have posted a number of questions, etc. over time, as well as shown a little bit of what I am doing, but this is my first chance to show what I have been working on in total, more than just components and partials.

Bike began - for me - as a semi-close-to-stock '78E in Star Black in pretty good condition that I purchased from a present or past member of this forum; it didn’t run very well for me though. Sometime in its past, a more distant PO had installed a PAMCO Ignition and VM34's.

My intent with this project was to "make it mine" (what everyone wants to do, I guess?) and get it to better-than-stock and with some modern as well as some - mostly - period correct modifications and updates. Maybe it could fall into the classification of a mild "restomod"?

Process and parts to get it to where it is today:

Paint – A good House of Kolor Shimrin facsimile of 1973 Yamaha Competition Green paint (color code 00L2, abbr. CGM) with 78E graphics rendered in white, plus 74-75 white YAMAHA tank decals in place of the screw-on emblems (decals via Diablo Cycle); this color was used on early ‘70’s DT’s, maybe RD’s and also Oceania TX750’s - this is all I know for sure, could be more models. Also, painted headlight shell; paint is courtesy of Precision Motorcycle Painting, South Bend IN, Craig McGlothlen. (I asked him to paint the headlight shell too after seeing @Raymond ‘s Miss November and his painted shell!);

Running gear - Sun Rims and SS spokes from Buchanan's, 19 x 2.15 F and 18 x 3.00 R both with Outex tubeless kits, running Bridgestone Battlax BT-46 tires, 100/90-19 F and 120/90-18 R;

Suspension - Bronze swingarm bushings; Hagon Road-series shocks (slim enough at the bottom to obviate any chainguard gymnastics); Minton-modded fork with new seals, etc and Progressive fork springs, plus a BFBC-FasTec fork brace;

Brakes - Rear drum brake rebuilt in the @5twins (and others) method with Ferodo shoes (MMM); Front disc is resurfaced stock but drilled (TrueDisk) with a Brembo P4 4-piston caliper and EBC pads mounted via a Pandemonium kit and using a Spiegler SS line and a 12.7mm master;

Electrics - Stock lights, but all with LED upgrades (SuperBrite, Sylvania & Philips) and using a Candlepower headlight housing with Philips H4 LED. Also used an XS850 headlight shell for some extra room; Rewound rotor (Thanks, @Jim!), new separate modern regulator and rectifier, new OEM brushes; switches & connections gone thru, cleaned and/or upgraded

Engine - Barnett Kevlar friction plates & Vesrah clutch springs; Heiden Tuning oil filter add-on and reed-valve crankcase breather assy (I now also have a Smedspeed spin-on oil filter adapter sump plate that I will probably install an oil change or two down the road; will jettison the Heiden oil filter at that point); a Type E Version 1 cam chain tensioner (per @5twins), an early aluminum dipstick (polished) per @DogBunny; new coil & wires augmenting the existing Pamco; rebuilt & rejetted VM34 carbs & SU-4229 UNI’s; MMM exhaust port optimizers, and a Delkevic 2 into 1 stainless exhaust system; painted the inside of the headpipes with VHT silver to try and mitigate the heat discoloration. May try to put together a 2 into 2 exhaust system in the future to replace the Delkevic.

Miscellanous - Stock seat recovered with a repop cover (MikesXS); Firepower street "superbike-style" handlebars with green-anodized aluminum bar ends & dogleg levers; all new cables; EK O-ring chain and stock gearing (17-34); a XS Special-spec chrome chainguard; an early Special rear fender with a XS650/XS750 SF/G taillight assy; a polished TX750 speedo drive & polished early hub cover (@5twins inspiration again!); a Hella Supertone Horn mounted out front as on a Special failed, as it didn’t function (meek little “gronk-gronk” was all it did), so subbed a reconditioned Special horn for now, and; a little paint, polish, a few other little bits and bobs & TLC.

Probably something or the other left out, but that's about it for now.

I also am holding a Mike's 750 9:1 BB kit in abeyance I got it very inexpensively, not sure if I ever will install it. Kept most stock take-off parts that were in good shape, so taking it back close to stock at some point could…be possible.

And again, many, many THANKS to all the top contributors on this forum for assisting me in this, and making this forum the wealth of information that it is!! Any and all questions, comments, etc. welcome; please ask!

Looks terrific in the green, well done :)

We have travelled similar paths with the Delkevic 2 into 1 exhaust. Then switching to a 2 into 2 later in. I was happy with the Delkevic, they're a good, well made system.

Right now, I have the Heiden Tuning 1 1/2" (38mm) headers which are longer than the stock headers, married to Commando pea shooter mufflers. An option worth thinking about if you want a 2 into 2 system that's not stock.
