What’s in your shop (tools)?

Gotta learn to weld with it now. And set it up proper and learn about differences in wires and such.

Any tips or links to a utube vid??

I did say tig.....it's a mig

This looks like a good wedding tutorial

Well this turned a 180 real quick.

The guy is a neighbour of a woman I do yard and light maintainence work.

He asked me if I could weld his gate hinges onto the posts....... Yea no prob.
Welded them on and he gave me $200. Not my rate for the job but he insisted. ....Ok thanks

The gates had quite a large gape between then when closed so wanted me to weld 2 extra peices of steel box tubing to close it up a bit. .....no prob.

Tacked on one side then my welder shit itself. Told him I wasn't sure if I was going to spend money on a new welder as I don't use them much, hardly at all. Would let him know, this was a Friday.

Checked around prices, decided I would but couldn't get or look at it till Monday. Had a look and the price was right. Pic in earlier post. Rang him, said I was buying one and would finish the job

Rained Mon, Tues, Wed, and showers on Thurs, Friday, although it did clear up in the Arvo, there were the odd skiffy showers. On the coast here they can b very specific, rain here but fine 2 ks up the road but showery another 5 ks on.

Any ways, went to weld them on Sat. Screenshot_2025-07-27-10-45-09-51_0ce57feeccaa51fb7deed04b4dbda235.jpg
Did the job 16 vertical welds about 2" long. He gave me $50. Rods cost me $22 which I mentioned to him, he offered me the mig welder saying he payed $100 for it and he couldn't weld, tried to use it and gave up. Never learned.

I said I wasn't interested, when I went to load up my gear he had put the Mig in my ute. Again said I wasn't interested and got him to take it out. ........got home and thought about it mmm maybe I could learn to aluminium weld with it so rang him asking if the offer still stood, if not, I was ok with that. .....he said Yea no prob.

He is a drinker.

The next morning all hell broke loose. Got a text complaining how I ripped him off was slow and basicly didn't want me to do anymore work.....he had another job he had been talking about.

So no Mig welder. Found out it wasn't compatible to do aluminium anyways.

You had a lot more conversation than I would have. If someone tells me F*** off, that’s likely the last thing he ever gets to say to me. I won’t allow for another opportunity. Good on you for being so polite. I’m not one to take the time.

Yeah too bad. Used to belong to a benefit riding group. There was one guy who was generally cordial enough most of the time but he bounced back nd forth between area chapters and ended up back in ours. Had him over for group cookouts and guys billiard nights and always got on well but he liked his Svedka vodka, often to excess.
There had been a week long state rally and most members in the state were on the group email chain and associated text chain. Just after the rally he noticed that he wasn't on the "Core" email chain, which was for the most dedicated long term chapter members and we rarely ever used as pretty much all our chapter members were Core.
Anyway he got into the Svedka one evening just after the rally and went on the state wide email chain and berated our chapter IT guy for not having him on the Core chain and it went back and forth between the two, eventually involving out First Officer who explained how we rarely used the Core chain any longer and if he had a beef he should take it up within the chapter and not rant his grievances to the whole state so he got an attitude and quit online, then some of his friends also got involved and it got real ugly.
Needless to say haven't seen him since and am personally no longer associated with the group, though not because of that. Just happens that over the passed 5-10 years most of our chapter members have Aged Out.

PS, I still donate to the charity yearly

Back to the subject matter.
I have a small 115 VAC Lincoln wire welder, 12x36 HF lathe, small bench top mill, soon to be replaced by a Enco full sized mill, FLoor drill press, one of those combo 30" wide roll, break, shear for thin sheet metal and a corner notcher, several tool chests and work benches and most of the accoutrements to outfit them

I was building a new transmission mount for my hot rod GT6 and needed to drill some holes in 1/4 steel. Of course, my bits were as dull as could be and would just generate heat. I dug around and found my Drill Doctor I had received as a gift years ago. I had never really been successful with it but this time I watched a YouTube video first and was able to put enough of an edge on the bits they cut through like butter! I'm a fan!

Got smarter in my old age. The old saying don't get mad get even

Living in a small community, word gets around fast. Having him admit he is a dickhead with a record of the conversation, I can rebuff any of his piss talk when he gets drunk and slags me off.

I have a drill doctor too and there’s a trick to getting a good cutting edge. I find when you put the bit in the holder, don’t tighten it 100% yet. Remove the holder from the body of the machine and give the bit a very small twist clockwise (maybe 5 degrees?). Then tighten the bit holder. This helps ensure the cutting edge of the bit is higher than the trailing edge. Not sure if I’m explaining the process clearly but it works. I find the machine relatively useless on very small bits. I rarely use it as I sharpen most of my bits by hand.

New addition to the roster of shop equipment yesterday... finally found an affordable compact horizontal bandsaw on FB. Rough but serviceable. Got all the moving parts cleaned/lubed and braced/reinforced the legs and wheels. Sawband on order so I should be cutting by mid-week. This will replace my trusty mechanical hacksaw, if it cuts at least as well as the latter.

From the Wife's Forester 25$ a piece :yikes:
Couldn't have done it without that short extension.

Been there, done that, what a pita! lol. We got a free new motor at 180,000 km from Subaru because of excessive oil consumption. Before they reinstalled the motor they asked if we wanted new plugs. I thought hell ya! Then they told me it would be a one hour charge to install them - and that’s with the motor on the bench. I wasn’t happy about that and made a big complaint. They installed no charge after failing the attempted gouge.

I felt the need. The need... to machine.

Made a manifold out of a 45mm (1¾) square aluminum bar drop I found in the scrap bin at work, and a backing plate so as evenly distribute the force and not mess up the wooden workbench leg.

Still need to get some more quick-disconnect outlets, or some pipe plugs. Not sure why I thought I would need to have this many outlets, but I figured I'd plug the ones I don't need.

Nice work but I don’t think 10 socket head cap screws are sufficient to hold tgat onto the leg.😀lol.
