What’s in your shop (tools)?

Here’s a cool old tool I just picked up. A power hack saw. Literally cost me $1.00. I took it apart for transportation and did a quick clean up. I fixed the power cord and added an on/off switch. Still needs some adjustments a couple of new belts but it cuts! Quite heavy and it does take up a bit of space but I always wanted a saw so I’ll keep this for a bit. I need to find some spare blades. Takes 12” or 14” blades.

Check out the attached video of the saw in action! At the end of the cut, the blade pops up and disengages from the drive.

Not sure if the saw is supposed to cut on the push or pull stroke? Judging by the chip tray I guessed it’s on the push? But second guessing myself maybe is should be pulling the blade into the cut applying force to the fixed jaw of the vise?

Back to this old thing. I want to store it inder my deck outside and to do that I need to lower it as much as possible. In the first pic you can see the po has the saw mounted to two 2x4’s with small casters underneath. To lower it I bought some 3” channel and welded 4x4 angle on the ends to allow the use of 3” swivel casters with brakes. The vertical leg of the 4x4 and]gle was trimmed to 3-1/2”. Once assembled, the channel should ride 1/2” above the ground. I haven't measured yet but I think I’ve reduced the height by at least 3-1/2”?

My welding got better on the second one. The first one I did needed to be ground to hide the shameful welds. Lol. Not pretty but it won’t break.

Finished a small welding job for a guy. He owed me for the rods on top of the work. He didn't have the $20 for the rods. Had bought this second hand 130 amp portable Tig welder then decided he didn't or couldn't weld with it.

Said no, then an hour later I thought why not. Now, ( still to pick it up), I now own a small tig. The ceramic covering around the tip has a chip so ????

That ceramic piece is an easily replaceable part, almost a consumable. A small TIG welder is super handy to have, and 20 dollars is a bargain!

Gotta learn to weld with it now. And set it up proper and learn about differences in wires and such.

Any tips or links to a utube vid??

I did say tig.....it's a mig

This looks like a good wedding tutorial

130A is OK on a MIG
Forget about alum. if it has that setting

Push thru or pull wire feed?

80/20 is what I use for gas
Stainless wire
After all welds, feed wire out about an inch to eliminate wire to tip jams

I was fortunate to have been able to participate in a 10 week (2 days per week) course at a local community college to learn the basics of stick and mig. It’s all about practice and more practice. It’s also helpful to have someone critique your work and offer suggestions to improve your welds.

My skill level is probably 4/10 right now. A buddy who is a professional welder commented that I’m well on my way to being good at it but it takes time and practice.

Most of my at home welding has been mig with .030 wire and 80/20 gas. Much of my learning was with stick. My tig sucks.

For me, my greatest challenge is being able to see the weld and joint when I’m running a bead. Welding in daylight helps but often times I’ll lose sight of the joint. Next time I get the welder out I’ll lighten the shade of my shield. I’m also looking to buy a led light for the helmet.

Btw if you have a chipped ceramic piece it’s most likely TIG? A pic of your machine would help with the ID.

I’ve been looking for one of these for a while. We used to use them in our shop at my last place of work to move parts and tools around. Invaluable. It’s part of a plan to declutter the garage. I can put lots of stuff from the floor, inside the cart and it’s no longer in the way. $30 well spent. The small, double carts are harder to find.

I’d like to get one more.

Carts are 25 cents at Aldi's!
I took ten...

Betcha your local grocery store has a mess of them lying around...just sayin' ;) !
I know but that would be considered theft and I’m too honest (or 🐓) to do that. This cart was from Bed bath and Beyond that went out of business in Canada over 2 years ago. I bought it with the intention of returning it to them but all the stores are gone now 🤣🤡
