What do you use in your parts washer?

Simple green has a special version that won't attack the aluminum like the green stuff does. The green stuff is OK if you don't leave it in long but it will attack the surface, make it turn dark and will put fine pits in it making the surface rough. Not a good thing IMO for the inner portions of the carb where the slide, shaft and butter fly go. If you limit it to say 30 mins, its fine. I left a carb for an 4 cycl bike in there for several hours cause I forgot to pull it out and it was dark and I had to polish some internals. I use this now 4 parts water, 1 part SG

I use mineral spirits or kerosene for cleaning. I don’t have a parts washer so I just use the bottom that I cut off a full sized garbage can. It has 6” high sides and works pretty well. For smaller tasks I cut the side out of a 3.78 jug. It’s nice because it’s easy to pour the used solution back into another container for future use.

Kerosene here is crazy expensive. With tax it’s approaching $5.00 / litre. I don’t buy a lot of it. If you use it and let the solids settle, it can be used many times before it’s ready to replace. Around here, proper disposal would be taking it to a hazardous waste facility fir recycling.

Quick calculation - kerosene at a big box store here is $11 usd / us gallon. Other options above and below are much more economical.

RE: Kerosene. If you have a small airport nearby, JET-A is currently about 6 bucks/gal. If you call and ask, most places (around here anyway) will let you fill a 5 gal can. 30 bucks to fill your washer ain't bad.

Lowes has kerosene.... 50 bucks for a 5 gal can.

That never even dawned on me, brilliant! Out here in the sticks. there are still a few homes that use it (kerosene) but only a couple of places carry it at around $5.50 a gallon.

Anyone have a particular recommendation of kerosene brand? I found this stuff and it seems economical for my budget and I can pick it up tomorrow morning. I'd have to get 3 of them (2.5 really).View attachment 341536
That's mighty fancy kerosene for burning in oil lamps, isn't it?
The same stuff is sold here, for that kind of price.
Normal kero is available at the pump for about a fifth of the price per litre.
