gas tank opening.jpg

Here is what I'm working with. The diameter is 2 1/2 and outside to outside of the 6 holes around it are 3 1/4. I was talking to a few guys on here earlier today a little about this, but we never came up with a solid answere.

INXS posted a link to a PDF file, when i opened it up this morning it had a lot of measurements for the holes in tanks like yours and caps.

Opening another thread with the same question will get you no ware and why would anyone want to answer again if they have already answered your first thread :shrug:

Umm... Ok. In my defense I clearly posted right after him that I didn't fully understand. That was yesterday afternoon and it was never replied to again so last night I did start a new one specifically asking about the gas cap.

I re read the PDF and I'm still unsure. The image they show looks very smilar yes, but the measurements are not right. On top of that I researched the aero site and didn't find an actual site to buy from. Found a lot of literature, but nothing showing my size and an order form.

I re looked at the the other link he sent as well and once again that is not right. My original post where I asked about many things wasn't geared specifically to gas caps. I thought 6 hours later starting a new thread specifically asking about caps would be ok to do. As an intelligent man it isn't easy asking for help in the first place. I am completely aware that my very limitted knowledge of mechanics could trigger me to ask very simple questions and cause me some embarrasement. We are here for the same reason though Skull. We both love XS650's. If you don't want to help me thats your choice, but you don't have to throw it in my face. I am a brand new member here and feel like I have already learned quite a bit from the help I have recieved and from reading other post, but honestly I don't feel very welcomed into the forums.

Southpaw, 650Skull is just trying to help keep things organized. Some people might have only seen this thread and would give the same suggestions that were given earlier in the original thread.

Maybe a link to the original thread, and a link from original thread with an explanation, would help clarify things.

Here's a link to the original thread: http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=744

Yes they are. You measure to the *center* of the bolt hole, not the outside. Pages 5 and 6 of that PDF looks like what you need. Or close enough that very little work will be needed to massage the metal to fit it. Unless you ask the guy who sold you the bike what cap he was going to use, you're only guessing.

On top of that I researched the aero site and didn't find an actual site to buy from. Found a lot of literature, but nothing showing my size and an order form.

First page of that PDF has an address and phone number. Calling them is always an option.

Seems i am the only one that is answering you:confused:. You need to redo your measurements properly and go back to the PDF file scroll down till you get to page 6 the hole opening is 2.460" close enough to your 2.5" and the Center to center for the outside holes on the PDF are 3" and your 3 1/4" measurement needs to be redone from center to center to check for the 3"

Skull I did measure center to center. I'm sure I could make it work, but I was just trying to find a better fit. I'm sure everyone can relate to starting a project in the blind and not knowing what the previous persons intentions were.

:banghead:

The holes are 1/4 off. It's clearly not the right application or dude was drunk when he drilled the holes. All I was trying to find out is if someone knew of the right cap for this.

I think the confusion is that you said in your first post in this thread that the outside to outside measurement was 3 1/4", so people are assuming that the same measurement center-to-center would be a little bit less, and the cap that is 3" center to center would work. But if you did actually measure center-to-center and got 3 1/4", then yes that cap wouldn't be a direct fit.

If you are set on trying to find something that will fit perfectly, you'll have to keep looking. Otherwise it wouldn't be that hard to make one of the ones previously mention work.

You could also probably find a used unmodified tank pretty cheap that might come with the gas cap and might end up costing less than buying a new cap for that tank, if you ever do find the correct one for that hole. Or if you have a welder and time, you could make just about any gas cap work.

Thanks for clearing that up Travis.................. 3 1/4" center to center means the hole is 1/8th out. depending on the bolt size it will in all likely hood work.if not a small grind with a Dreemal drill with a grinding stone or small round file that will fit into the hole will solve the problem................ Now if you can't sort that out from here then give the tank to someone that will and buy one off ebay..........and don't ask how to do that:D

Ahh... I do see where the confussion could have came from. I didn't explain it well enough. That is my fault. From center to center on the outer holes its 3 1/4. That cap is the closest thing that I have seen, and also one of the most expensive!! $140 without a lock and $170 with. For that price it should install itself and wax my bike! lol

lol... Thank yall for your help. :D

I do have another question that skull I think you will be pleased to know has not been brought up by me previously

I'll start a new thread on it :yikes:

Suthpaw, the 2 1/4 cap looks' like it would fit. Just drill some new mounting holes. The old holes should get covered up by the new gasket. That one is $99. Looks like a nice cap. Let's see, new tank with cap,$300. New cap on a good tank, $99 plus shipping, hmm?

Some one ripped out the stock collar and latch piece and installed one of those aircraft type caps with the allen bolts. I would just find another kit and install make sure it's the same size or bigger than the one that was in there,or just buy a used tank for 30-40 bucks

99 bucks you can get a monza cap!!!!! Here"s a great idea just buy a used gas tank for 50 bucks,if u cant find one just buy a new cap and either weld or use aluminum bondo to cover up the old holes,or Jb weld for that matter. There were done, how about that weather where having?

looks like it's cut and drilled for an aircraft filler cap, like they use on streetfighters.
