What have you done to your XS today?

First I straightened the used seat trim from eBay, then polished it, then mocked up by just stuffing it under the seat strap. Next I will have to source some kind of suitable fasteners for it. Or maybe I will end up having to make or modify something.
Then I removed the Denfeld luggage rack/ pannier bracket I have had for a while.
Then I temporarily mounted the new to me panniers. Made in Wichita, Kansas, by "Land Tool Company". I think they will look great if/ when painted green 😁

Today I began prepping my 75 gauges ready for the new face decals from Classic Gauges, sadly the posting let me down so while they are out I flatted back the brackets and gauge cases along with the handlebar mounts and gave them some coats of satin black.

I'm like a kid at Christmas waiting for parts to turn up, I've ordered a new dash/instrument decal as well, as the bracket is from an RD350 so has incorrect labeling. I've decided to change it to black from the original bronze colour but feel I may have made the wrong decision.

Today I've got the battery box out with relative ease, probably 30 minutes, but not using the method I've read about on here. I loosened the lower plastic mudguard detached everything from the battery box including the bushes then spun it 90° counter clockwise while rotating it front end upwards as and when possible. It then just came out fat end first.

I think a dip in Bilt Hamber Deox to remove all the rust then I'll either get it powder coated or rattle can it in Zinc primer then satin black. I presume the bolts in the sides doing nothing would have held the air boxes on?

Well, the I was taking the SG for a ride and as I was pulling the clutch in, I heard the snap and felt a dead lever. Luckily I carry a spare clutch cable. Unlucky I didn't have all the tools to change it. I parked in a shady place and a guy asked if I was OK. I told him my problem and he invited me into his garage and loaned me the needed tools. He had a New Yammer R7 and BMW inline model. When I shoved the new cable in, it went easy peasy. Adjusted up real quick. Said my thank yous and we talked guy stuff for a bit and resumed headed home.

Went for first ride after the build last weekend. Throttle stopped responding. Still idled.
Checked everything. Carb issue. Rust inside the tank. Electrolysis and red koted the tank. Installed new vm34s and a better inline filter.

Gauges coming along nicely, unfortunately the centre fascia didn't go so well! It had a mottled matt appearance which I wrongly assumed was a protective layer, it peeled off very easily and looked much better underneath but when touched black ink came off on my fingers. That's now good for the bin so I'll go back to the drawing board on that bit.

^Interesting.

Well, I tightened and lubed my drive chain and tightened up my steering shaft. Bike goes much faster! I've always taken Pamcopete's admonition to relax and re-tighten the rest of the bolts in downward fashion including the fender and axle. Not sure what it's supposed to do. It might remove just a hair of nervousness in the front or could be imagination. Time consuming and knuckle skinning, so wonder if how much benefit there really is.

Dragged this out of the shed... not sure whether it should be posted here or in "Justa Joke"... ok, don't laugh too loud. View attachment 229459View attachment 229460
One of my 650s looked similar but was complete when it was removed from a neighbors yard years ago. I just did a little at a time and eventually it came back to life. I rode it for several years and it took me on some memorable rides. Fixing it up was more fun than watching TV.

That's the plan, a little at a time. Shop time beats TV for me anytime.

It's been nice weather around here for November, but rain is approaching and then forecast highs in the 40's for foreseeable future:rolleyes:. Drained a bunch of carbs and filled the tanks - with the exception of the tracker. As it's a fiberglass tank, it just gets drained.

shame you didn't document your process to add any differences to the gauge thread..........

hope it helped you
