Just went out on the First Ride! What a fugn bewdy! Took it fairly easy as it's mostly new, didn't go over 1/2 throttle, but seems like it's got plenty of torque. Brakes work nice & the 277 sounds excellent through the MAC pipes. Seems to handle well, maybe a bit low as I scraped the sidestand on one corner.🏍️🏁
Just did 100 k ride. A few issues, oil leak from dodgy thread for neutral switch, right rear indicator rotated around facing skywards, electronic tacho is all over the shop, tappets sound a little noisy & fuel tap is touching valve cover dome nut. Starter gear not engaging most of the time but I found a good one with a heavy spring clip in my box of bits. Not too bad for first run.

XS650SH is headed my way. This will be another distraction from my regular chain of XS650 events.

My grandson is thinking, “Where have you been hiding these wheels?”

I could be wrong Marty, but I think that seat was a one year only.... '80SG. It's the same as the one on my SG.
Was the seat swapped?

Yes, that's a Mike's XS repop 1980 seat. It also has 1980 repop badges on the side covers. The '81 badges only come in left side, I'll start a thread on it soon. It should be delivered to me tomorrow. I've had it listed in my signature for several years or more.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you've owned this bike for several years, just never had it in your possession?
Yes. It was a father/daughter project. My daughter and her husband bought a house and took the bike at my insistence. Since SIL has no interest in motorcycles and my daughter is extremely busy with important things, I harvested the consumable parts (tires, battery, etc.) I moved to Mississippi nearly five years ago, and she expressed to me that she wants it to go away. Since she's aware of how much I spent on it, she asked me to retrieve it. Without me nearby, her riding career didn't go far. I'm near Memphis. The motorbike has been stored in an airconditioned shed in Atlanta. I picked it up as a basket case probably 15 years ago.

How is the quality of that re-pop seat?

I have a couple 1980 Specials and could use a fresh seat...was thinking about pulling the trigger on one.

Side & tank emblems as well...

Quiet loud but excelent note.
Thanks to everybody in this great community for your many words of advice, great tech info and insperation.
I intend to put a list of mods together along with my buying experiances and post along with more pics soon.

Have a special seat laying around. In good shape and I won’t be using it. I can send pictures if you’re interested

A '78 Special, said to be low miles, that a fellow bought for parts and did not need. So I have given it a new home. Have to go get the frame and the motor Tuesday.
It's going back together stock, as the frame has never felt the kiss of the angle grinder.

Is that 6737 kms showing on the speedo? That would be only 4186 miles., low miles indeed. '78 is a good year. It got the last (and best in my opinion) set of BS38's, and still had a headlight on-off switch.

It does show 6737km and the frame and motor are clean and undisturbed by a guy with a full case of beer and half a plan. Actually, the wiring harness has tags on it, the back story is that a guy took it apart bagged and tagged and my seller got it from him to supplement a 75 he is building as a cafe. All I am getting is the complete frame and motor, will have to supply my own forks, wheels, seat, tank, carbs etc. etc. But I have all these parts to put on, except the disc brake rear wheel I have has a rattle in it, so may switch over to a drum rear with all that entails.
