What have you done to your XS today?

Today I just advanced the timing on my PAMCO. Now the TDC line on the rotor properly hits the F-mark.
However I noticed when I rev to 3000k rpm, it doesn't advance.
It only advances around 4500rpm. Don't really know how to proceed.

Does it use the mechanical advance unit?
Yes, I believe so (photo attached)

Got a knock. I used the stethoscope method. (Long skinny screwdriver). It took me straight to the left intake valve. It was loose. I adjusted it. I now have a quiet engine, at least as abnormal noises go.

Time to throw a leg over to go get a dose of live music.

Im on it coach! Enjoy the music!
And while you're in there, lubricate the bob weight pivots and the slot where the bob weights rotate the shaft as they're thrown out. Make sure everything moves nicely with no stickiness. That should fix it :)

TT, I see a couple things wrong with your advance unit install. It's obviously a new aftermarket unit but it still needs to be lubed. First, the slash on the little center disc should point to the slash on the backing plate. Yours is 180° off (common mistake). It doesn't really matter with a Pamco because it fires both plugs on every revolution, but you might as well correct it while you have things apart. Second, the lower spring in your pic isn't connected to the fly weight correctly. It looks like it's just looped around the tab that fits into the center disc slot instead of being in the little hole on the arm (like the upper one). And finally, that notched ring that holds the backing plate on has a raised lip on one side around it's I.D. That should face out. It looks like yours is installed backwards, with that lip facing in ......

Carbs worked loose on my morning gravel road ride, had a huge backfire on the decel,

Roadside fix and back on the ride, came home, made sure they were TIGHT, just came back from my evening ride ( it’s summer, I try and “bookend “ most sunny days with an early morning and late evening sunset ride.

Parked up in the old shop at home, played with a camera filter at last light :)

Is that a 74-76 Vee Dub bus bumper on the bench?

Well, more excitement. I was on the way to have a coffee with friends this evening and while downshifting, the linkage for the gear shift broke. Fortunately it broke close to home so I was able to ride it home in first gear, hugging the side of the road. Now I need to replace the short gearshift arm. I’m planning to make it from steel vs aluminum.

Anyone know if the spline on the lever is unique to the XS or is it common among other Japanese (or other) bikes?

Found a “donor” gear shift lever from a friend. I believe it was from a Virago. Straightened it near the splined section using my induction heater - great tool. Cut it to length the drilled and tapped the piece. I test fitted it and it appears to work well. Polished it up a bit, now it’s ready for a bit of paint.
