Accepted the things that I could not change, changed the things that I could not accept. Fixed some wire that I nicked with a drill bit. re-routed some wiring, multiple times, Mocked up a battery/electrics box/shroud thing that I've seen done before, installed the proper spark plug wire combo, attempted to connect the exhaust to frame but all the mounts have been ground off, noticed rust starting on all parts ground off, was going to try to treat with this paint over rust stuff that I had buy couldn't find the can, need to figure out a way to deal with moisture because the bike is semi-outside, I thought about some kind of cosmoline type stuff but I've done that before and shit just ends up sticking to it, don't want to spray it and get paint all over, Anybody have recommendations for some type of coating until I can paint the frame proper? Surfed the internet for inspiration, recommendations, and parts.

Shovel Jockey, I'm thinking that choke nipple fell out because it looks like you have newer carb bodies ('76-'77) that were modified for use on your bike. In stock form, those carbs each had their own choke and there was no crossover tube. The carbs were also bolted together as a "bank" and used only one throttle cable. Whoever modified them probably drilled the hole for that nipple that fell out too large.

This may bring up issues with which rebuild kits to use. The float bowls are older, '75 or older by the looks of them, and would be the BS30/96 pilot jet type. You'll need to check what needle and needle jet combo is installed, it may be '76-'77 spec.

Broke my bike down for refinishing a few weeks back. Spent this week blending the welds on the exhaust I made....long process. Also made this trick little piece of functional art to hold some spare plugs in the stock coil location.

Nice work, you should see the welds on my chopper, or not. I should have posted pictures of em on the Halloween thread

I'm far from a pretty welder so I'd never make fun of anyone else's. I bought a TIG years ago and have never had time to teach myself so my MIG welds have had to do. The exhaust I wanted to look like 1 seamless pipe though. I'll try to grab a pic of them later

Added the last little 3 inch piece to one of my pipes today for the fishtail to slip onto and blended it in. Just waiting for a scotch brite conditioning belt to make 1 more pass over the pipes with before chrome. 1.5 all the way back then up to 1.75 to slip into the dual fishtails. Just debating some type of 2 piece finned collar because the flat ones don't do it for me. There are bungs welded to the backs of the pipes for mounting plus the transition between sizes so I can't remove them now.

Sweet pipes dude! You're gonna gonna have to be careful going under some bridges. Seriously though, I like em, those are cool! Trying to look at the mid control/brake pivot and see how you did that. That's one of the conundrums that I have run into and put to the back of the list to deal with later (eh...14 years or so give or take) The guy who fabbed mine pulled a fast one on me. He had the controls , brake pivot and exhaust all set up and it looked like it all fit but he had the headers on loose so the foot pegs would fit using the exhaust mounts. Also the brake was in the path of the pipe, I couldn't come up with a solution other than lower or raise the pipes somehow?

still cleaning up the carbs, o-rings and new needles are on their way. Still have to pull the main needle jet and give that a good cleaning too, but I should have the carbs put back together this week!
Oh any advice on getting the horribly mangled screws out of the back end of the carb? The mounting bracket that holds the carbs together goes there, but so far nothing I’ve tried has released those soft screws

Penetrating oil…give it time to work. Maybe even a day. Punch the centers then drill them carefully and then use a reverse drill bit to back them out. Good luck…maybe file the tops flat to give yourself the best shot at drilling the center
+1 on that. I'll add that heat is your friend. Zamak (zinc) expands faster than steel.
Flatten the top, center punch and drill the hole. Insert an easy out or LH drill bit and put a heat gun on the carb body. As it heats up (expands) the screws should come out fairly easy.

So, todays drama; went to start Bitsy, turned on fuel, choke on, couple of priming kicks, hang on - whats that strong smell of fuel?
Look down to my left and a big puddle of fuel on the floor from LH carb/airbox. Doh!
So it was off with the carbs, open em up and found a bit of black rubber in the float valve seat and another tiny piece I found in the bowl (circled in red). I think the crud came from the fuel line as it is perished, in fact it ripped in two as I pulled it off the carb inlet. I'm going to give them a good cleanout and going over tomorrow, while they were off I thought I'd check the butterflies were centered, nope - LH one has a gap so thats the first job for tomorrow. Had enough tonight and hands/clothes stink of fuel. The wife is complaining that I've stunk out the garage and the utility room (that the garage is attached to), I've washed my hands about five times using everything from soap to dishwasher liquid and the smell just comes back again after 10 minutes LOL. Also need to do some research as when I flicked the butterfly valves a couple of times while holding them up to the light, a washer fell out! So while I look up some exploded diagrams of the BS38's, if anyone knows where the washer goes (orange arrow in picture), do let me know!

Edit: Apparently the washer fits the float valve, must have been stuck to the body and I never noticed it!

Edit2: for clarification the washer pictured turned out to be incorrectly fitted to the float valve seat, it was in fact the washer for the choke plunger cap (part #37 in the parts list - thanks 650Skull) and it is larger than the valve seat washer. Turns out that PO had incorrectly fitted it to the LH valve seat, - the R/H valve seat had no washer fitted at all and one of the choke plunger cap had no washer either. New washers now fitted and carbs are now reassembled correctly!
