I also put a new clutch pack in yesterday. Upgraded to the extra 8 plate setup that Gary sold. Easy peasy install.
When I found the same on my clutch cover, I discovered here that the majority of them on XS650 have this kind of flaw in them. Presumably back in the day the very worst castings were recycled into the pot. Those deemed to be acceptable are what we see today. It's something you're unlikely to see on a more modern motorcycle. Production methods have improved immensely in the last five decades.Stripped down the clutch cover and scrubbed it down in the parts tank. Interestingly, looks like someone had done some welding on the inside of it previously. So either my Dad had some welding done on it, his Dad had some welding done on it, or it's not the original cover but a replacement for when my Dad hit that deer waaaaaaaaaaay back when.

Outside looks fine...

Inside looks like a weld repair, then sanded down. Talked to my Dad, he says it's the original cover, and said it wasn't damaged in the accident. No idea. Doesn't leak or anything.
Lovely work and they look fantastic.Basically finished the restoration of my BS34's today....just waiting on new rubber plugs for the pilot jets. These had sat outside for many years and the slides were stuck inside until I ran them through the sonic cleaner. They were blasted and Cerakoted, all springs polished, 1 size up on main jet and adjustable needle, new floats and seats, new throttle shaft seals, and I made a bracket to adapt a generic parts store choke onto them since it was originally on the bars.
I appreciate that thank you. I'm a stickler for detailsLovely work and they look fantastic.
Makes me ashamed of my carbs.
OK, Just got my new switch. While comparing the two the old switch has 2 blue wires and the new doesn't everything else matches.Well I got the switch out. It was a bit of an adventure, but it is out. Decided to look at the new switches available before digging in to mine.
Every switch I looked at, didn't match the one I have, until I saw one from a European model. How or why, I have that one is beyond me. But it is what it is.
Think I will order a new one and not bother with fixing the one I have.
Do you do carb restoration for customers?Basically finished the restoration of my BS34's today....just waiting on new rubber plugs for the pilot jets. Yes but usually if the vehicle is in my shop with it. If your bike is already running well and the carb is being set up the same way I'd consider doing them without the bike in house.Do you do carb restoration for customers?
If I wanted some POS tool I'd look on Amazon. If I want one I KNOW is gonna work, I make it myself.WOW just WOW
That is the most overbuilt and over-engineered tool I have ever seen.
It is cool. Love to have one.
