I
Things are starting to go back together on the '74 "freshen up". I originally "restored" it about 12 years ago. Today I got one of the forks and headlight ears back into place, but was stymied when I couldn't find the upper fork tube clamp bolts I had set 'em aside for polishing and being old and dumb, forgot where(they were in a box, I'm a dumbass- out of sight=lost). Fresh fork springs are going to be a challenge to get compressed. Also installed re-chromed fork clamp covers I've been sitting on for 10+ years. Also many years ago I bought what I thought was a good repro "dash" plate, mine was corroded at the bottom so I blacked it out. Won't work- it's SO annoying that these things changed such a little bit. I think the plate is for a different bike, but it's SO close. Popped the brake switch mount on and added the hard line. Discovered the $30 worth of gaskets I just ordered were "in stock" in my stash. Hope to be riding in another week

I’ve been searching for that exact dash plate for my 1974 with no luck so far. Mine is destroyed by a key chain dangling

New fork springs are in, spent today working on getting the rats nest inside the headlight sorted out, always a lengthy process even w/notes and pics and diagrams. Had to walk away from that when a bullet connector broke, none in stock. So switched to wet sanding tins. Hard to resist "fixing" all the factory production stamping wrinkles on the bottom no one can see anyway ...

My build stalled for several years while I played with adventure bikes mostly, but I’m getting back on track now. The engine will be in bits for a rebuild next week but in the meantime I’ve started a few small jobs.

XS650 tragics look away now - I’m going for a brushed alloy look on the side covers and have almost got the initial pass on one done with very coarse sandpaper. I’ll work down to finer grit and straighten the brush lines up from here. Don’t worry too much though, the bike is far from original thanks to the previous owner and I have no intention of putting it back.

Oo, that looks nice! Are you going to put any paint in the letters?

TAFFY GETS NEW BITS

BS34 T-PIECE TO THE RESCUE & New Start Stop Button.

Got this button to replace my failing key ignition.

IMG_1311.jpeg

25mm thread matches the hole left by the Key Iggy Switch.

A new carburetter T-Piece arrived today from NRP Carbs & Diaphragms.
Thanks to @Its been a long time for the link.
www.nrp-carbs.com/shop
Quality compared to the one from Yambits.co.uk (Which didn't fit) is far better, and seems to be machined far more precisely.

Yambits:

Note solder mess.

Next down the shop to try it & the switch.

Thanks for the thanks 😎 . Let's hope NRP are as good as their word and it actually fits! Have to say, it looks much better quality. But the proof of the pudding etc.......

Today, I am cleaning and polishing and wiping and cleaning and shining my XS. She needs to be ready for Friday when I tow her to Central TX to the prestigious handbuilt MC show. It used to be a local show, then it grew to national size, now they display custom handbuilt motorcycles from across the globe and even opened another show in LA.
So while I am proud and honored to have been accepted (they accept only about 130 exhibits out of maybe 3000 submissions), it will be a lot of polishing and towing and weather and media interviews and this and that. I have mixed feelings about it because it's gonna be a busy weekend but that's not a bad thing. :)
