What have you done to your XS today?

Pulled the meter ground wire all the way to bike earth close to battery minus
I had the ground soldered on the clamp against the handlebar it had come lose
PMA 14. 1 V lights on not had that high before ... 14.4 Lights off a bit above idle rpm with Choke rev counter Not working

is there a trick to getting the top two bolts on when installing a starter in the frame?
Problem explained. I was used to working on the ‘72 frame. You know, the one where a starter was an afterthought? There’s 10 acres of room back there to work on the starter. Maybe one of the reasons Yamaha beefed that area up with the frame change in ‘74

It's good idea. I use service checklists for the bikes, kinda need to for keeping track of when and what I've dun on each bike, and on the back of the XS650 checklist I've put a list of spanner sizes and which fasteners to check & tighten with each. So they are all checked minimum of each oil change.

Will do similar on the Bullet checklist but meantime the Bullet tends to get a once over of all fasteners whenever it's sitting in the back yard and the Sun's out. Still learning which sizes fit - AF, Whitworth, the odd one a metric size fits best.

Bullet engine is spitting a little bit of oil so might take the tank off and torque the cylinder head and rocker box hardware and see if that fixes it.
For a while . . .

So, I'm sorry, maybe I missed it, but what is the "Bullet"?

Yesterday I fixed my tachometer..... I think. While waiting on my clutch springs and nothing better to do I took my broken tach apart. Like so many things on this bike I could see someone had been in there before me and also there was a spot of grease dead center on the back side of the glass??? It took me a few minutes but then I realized that when that person put it back together the glass was pressing against the center of the needle and keeping it from moving so they tried greasing it. When that didn't work at that point they just gave up. With the glass off the needle moved just fine when I spun the cable. With some careful reassembly the needle now clears the glass, no grease needed. The magnetic coupling saved the needle from damage when it was stuck. I'm hoping when I can fire up the bike I will see a fully functioning tach. Fingers crossed!

The other day I was going to take my XS out for a ride but it wouldn’t run without the choke. I didn’t have time to mess with it so I took my other bike. Today I got a chance to take a look. Kicked my bike and gas was pissing out of the right carb (vm34s). Had the same problem on the left a few weeks ago. These carbs as many of you will know, are identical not symmetrical…so what’s outward on one is inward on the other. Pulled the side covers and air filter so I could swap out the line. Stopped leaking fuel but still wouldn’t run. Thought I’d adjust the idle screws ever so slightly. Gave the right carb a quarter turn and took a look at the left…no screw at all!

Is the crossover pipe leaking? I believe running only with the choke on is an indication that the pilot circuits are not functioning.

Thanks I’m really not familiar so every issue that comes up is a new one. I’ve got a manual though and will look into it!

Well, if you have VM34 carbs, there will be no crossover fuel line between them. And since they're aftermarket, they won't be mentioned in a manual. One of the reasons I stick with stock carbs, lol. I've managed to acquire several spare sets over the years, rebuilt and tested them, and now they reside on the shelf as back-ups.

Hey fellas bought Id share some of what I’ve been doing on my bike lately. It’s a 80 special that I hard-tailed with a 77 447 engine with Hugh’s ignition, Shell 1 cam and big bore kit. Going to be a kick only bike, waiting for some parts to come back from being vapor honed, then I can finish the engine and get it into the frame.

This week cam up with these forward controls and rear master mount, plus I finished the rear fender and mounts and finished an in-frame wire tuck with mini turn signals. Productive weekend! Enjoy!

Fried the regulator for the PMA
Warm day Voltage started to oscillate charging 13. 8 to 14.1 lights on
Fault finding stopped charging totally :can have messes it up myself
A short inside the regulator combo between power + 12 V and brown bypassing ignition switch.

It did charge well ..Happy with the low RPM charging. And it was a bit bad sloppy setup. I know that took a chance .
Dont have the key for the rotor but it has not moved
But now I am gonna go back to stock if I can get that to work

Today I installed a Heidein(not sure if I spelled that right) Racing reed valve, and #30 mikuni pilot jets. Still not right but it looks just a bit cooler So there's a win. I take em were I can get em.

Even though projects are “down the road” I still keep my eyes open for things I’m gonna need. When I picked up the ‘75 a few weeks ago the Airboxes were missing the hatch and the filters. Well this set popped up on FBMP for $25 for the set plus shipping. They had the original filters inside which are easily recovered and this was the first time I could handle the foam without it turning to dustIMG_3707.jpegIMG_3822.jpeg

Since I left her sitting in the hot shop all summer (3 months), I assume that finally did the float bowl gaskets in. They started leaking like a sieve once I opened the petcocks. Ordered new gaskets, trimmed and installed, set the float height, had to use some bigger bolts in a few worn out threads and she's not leaking anymore.
Oh wait, what is this? Oil on the starboard side head? Yup. Finger wipe test revealed that the exhaust valve adjustment cover was leaking oil. The acorn nuts were tight. So the gasket is probably now too thin. I cleaned it all up and applied a thin coat of sealant on the gasket. If that doesn't help, I will need a new one.
Glad she's in one piece and once the temperatures drop below 100F (close to 40C), I will take her out for a ride again.
