What have you done to your XS today?

Yes, a voltmeter is a very good idea. I installed one and removed it once I had confidence in the charging system. I fitted new rectifier and automotive regulator in place of the 48 year old originals.
Ya ... trying to work my way to first ride in the spring with mostly original parts .... Was considering an electronic rectifier, regulator but decided to service and check existing 50 yr old parts they seem to be doing the job they were designed for.
i have a lot of experience in automotive with mechanical regulators and point/condenser ignition systems, so not new to me but way back in the memory banks!

Shiny.

A pause in the cold and very rainy weather. Enough to start building the back end of the 650D again. All new rubbers, wiring in incredibly good condition so cleaned up and reused. I guess the PVC of the wiring has the benefit of being tucked away from the UV in the sunlight that makes it go brittle.

Super nice!!!

Weather warmed up to about 10c , so took the opportunity to do a test run at sustained hiway speeds and was very pleased with the performance.... a few more parts showing up today.
Will likely go up a tooth on front sprocket... was at about 4k at 60 mph ... would like that a little lower.... curious as to what others are running for gearing?

"A place to post up what'cha been doing in the garage or on the road. As always show us the pics!" gggGary

Today I gave her a wash
then got out the carnauba wax and waxed her.
lubed the drive chain
checked oil
ordered a new front master cylinder that looks retro instead of the modern one I have now. It will look much better and work well too.
Sorting the old girl out. Now with twin discs but lot the Y out of Yamaha logo👍

Side stand modifications..... I have done a search for side stand mods and no results that will address my concerns about the side stand on my 76.
To start with ... I don't think the arm itself is the original but I don't think that the correct arm will get me the side stand I like.
In my opinion the mount is too far forward.
My thoughts.... the mount should be about 2 inches toward the rear would make it a lot more user friendly.

Winter prep. A week or so ago when it was about to freeze up overnight I cleaned the XS as it was a bit mucky afer various rides:

Today I drained the carbs after checking the float bowl fuel levels (I had trusted they were set correctly from the factory - they were) but had to take the old girl's clothes off so I could drop the needles one notch as I feel it's been running a little rich, especially since I poked an endoscope down the plug holes when I did the oil & filter change. Rather more carbon on the crowns than I liked after 2000 miles and the plugs are a bit on the dark side of brown:

I guess I'll find out how much difference that makes in the spring!
My only remaining winter job is to replace the indicators as a mate riding behind me in the summer told me that they are rather dim. I have a new set ready and waiting ...

And now the long wait until the new riding season. Ho hum.
