It does look like it was made for a Champion frame. I think I'll sort out the subframe & use it for the build. If I may, that's by far the nicest flat-track tailpiece IMO and for that reason, I'd vote to keep it!

I have the hoop from a 77 that I regrettably turned into a chopper if you decide to go back to originalNot sure where it's from. The PO cut the rear section of the frame into bits & threw them away. Not sure if I leave it on or try to return it to near stock. It does look different to most seats though. I've also got an un-used fibreglass fuel tank that it came with that looks like a Gopher Glass one.

Got this motor back together and running sweetlyToday I fitted a replacement barrel and pistons
And started cleaning off the piston debris from the valve and seat ready to lap them in again
You're very wise to use the OEM oil seal. Did you use the OEM O ring as well? Here's how I am now fitting the seals after having issues fitting them.Got this motor back together and running sweetly
I had a bit of a shock when I first started it because smoke was coming from the right cylinder
I hadn't realised how much oil was in the right hand downpipe!
I washed it out with petrol and it's fine now
I've been out and done 10 miles just to make sure it's ok and the only issue is the camshaft seal is still leaking on the rh side
I scotchbrighted the cam and fitted a genuine 5mm Yamaha seal and it's still weeping!

I also recommend changing the cross head countersunk screws to Allen screws while you're in there. Much easier to work with.

It's the seal that's leaking
Not the O ring or the gasket or the screws
I thought it'd be ok this as the camshaft journal looks mint
It's 100% the sealIf you are sure it is the seal and not the gasket which I had problems with on the left side
i would wait a while. Rubber can change properties after some heat cycles ..and seat better at the surfaces ,
If been siting on a shelf a while maybe not exactly round out of the bag
Sometimes it gets better .and sometimes not.
It can happen when assembling that they get damaged at sharp edges.
I use grease on them assembling
It's 100% the seal
I can see a tiny line running down from the centre
But I've only done 10 miles so I'll give it a chance![]()
Just been out and done 40 miles and it's stopped leaking so hopefully it's sorting itself outRemember a boss at the Excavator Factory New seals for Hydraulic pistons was tested but only in warmer weather
Good results A batch was ordered and started installing
Came Winter and the seals was not able to change form / flex when cold so when the machine was cold started the Hydraulic Oil was flowing out
In such volumes that the batch could not be used
They tried to keep it quiet but some people knew about it.
they were in an unnecessary hurry. they should have sent out a sample series for a while, maybe 2 years
It hadn't gone to waste
S*it Happens .. but they should have managed it that time.
The one you have can be a bit hardened after being in store and out of round ( Positive Thinking )
But again a replacement may be needed but I would wait 200 km or so maybe more if changes can be noticed
and some warmer weather.

Slot your studs like this and you won't need to take the engine out to replace the base gasketI started pulling the engine back out of my Bobber. I pulled it last year and replaced a leaking Athena green base gasket. While assembling I sprayed the head gasket with Copper coat gasket sealer at which point something happened and I didnāt get back to assembling for a few days and the result was a leaking head gasket after start-up. Re torquing had no affect so itās coming out again. I can get the engine out in pretty quick, the only snag is the early frames are a little tighter fit. Sometimes it falls in and out, sometimes itās a struggle.View attachment 370156
And while you are in there you can drill the location dowels to allow the coloum of oil that gets trapped back into the mouth of the crankcase , that's what the notch is there forSlot your studs like this and you won't need to take the engine out to replace the base gasket
Just remove the studs with a screwdriver
