Here is a good one from one of my favorite YouTubers, Pacific Mike. He works exclusively on old Harley's, but the process is the same and he is really good at walking you though the steps.
Garys shows you threading the hub completley 1st and then laying the rim over it...easy-peasy (sort of anyway)
Being properly admonished, I pulled the side cover yesterday and checked the worm gear. It looked correct but was not greased properly. When I pulled the worm gear out, I noticed this little guy. Is this 8mm ball bearing supposed to be there? How come I can't find it on the schematics? Oh, and do you know what happens when you drop it at the garage door when you have a slight slope leading to your lawn? Yep, it disappears. For some reason I had another in my parts stash. FWIW I am using the one-piece clutch push rod and the inner clutch thrust bearing (#39-6505).Lets go! switch off the WWW and start ... its done in within 48minutes
Yes it is. There's a ball on both ends so both sides can make minimal friction contact. (on the two piece rod, there's also a third in the middle).

The ball isn't made to come out, even though it can eventually. It's staked in at the factory, so they consider it a part of the next higher assembly... the actuator.

I just replaced my speedo again ( 75 ) but this time I used foam moulding from window trim
It seems like it's a good fit and better than the o rings I had used in the past and the needle doesn't bounce around like it had in the past

Wasn't a separate factory part (bushing is part of the shock absorber assy); someone may have a facsimile p/n?
I don't know of a Yamaha part. I bought rear shock eye rubbers for a set of Hagon shocks last year. They're available and they're out there. I think getting imaginative on eBay could be a good bet.

Shock bushings are readily available through Amazon. I will be buying some later today and will post an asessment if anyone is interested.

Some great weather around so I thought Taffy should do the commute to work.
Last few rides have been trouble free including an excellent ride posted in the 'Just Ride' thread recently.
Hot morning start, togged up in the gear (too warm
). Fire up Taffy and away............
1 mile down the road and Taffy miss-fires and drops to one cylinder; oh no not again....
Turn around and head back, Taffy drops to one occasional firing cylender. then cuts out.
Push bike back to lock-up unit in full kit.......NOT VERY HAPPY!

Adam, if you like to get help with this: i do a lot of Carbwork, and if you know a Petrolhead that goes sometime to the Northloop, that will be a Way to get a Taxfreetransport to me!

Started on the relacing the wheel project. Worst part so far was getting the damned second side of the tire off of the rim. 
I removed an inner and outer spoke for comparison and the spokes supplied by XS650 Direct don’t have the same bend angles. I’ll test fit s couple tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. Who knows, the spokes that were on the bike may have been wrong?
Lots of pics plus marking the hub should make reassembly easier.
