What have you done to your XS today?

Started on the relacing the wheel project. Worst part so far was getting the damned second side of the tire off of the rim. I removed an inner and outer spoke for comparison and the spokes supplied by XS650 Direct don’t have the same bend angles. I’ll test fit s couple tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. Who knows, the spokes that were on the bike may have been wrong?

Lots of pics plus marking the hub should make reassembly easier.

Taffy has been riding exceptionally well for the last few months, so this trouble was totally out of the blue.
If you have seen my build thread I'm fairly intimate with my carbs / cleaning / rejetting / fettling etc.
I think something electrical has vibrated loose on my hacked in GONZO lash up. My fault as I have never made good my system following the lash up since it was installed. Serves me right! I will investigate on Sunday I hope and post my findings.

Taffy has been riding exceptionally well for the last few months, so this trouble was totally out of the blue.
If you have seen my build thread I'm fairly intimate with my carbs / cleaning / rejetting / fettling etc.
I think something electrical has vibrated loose on my hacked in GONZO lash up. My fault as I have never made good my system following the lash up since it was installed. Serves me right! I will investigate on Sunday I hope and post my findings.

Sounds very much like something related to the Gonzo. I fear you will not find anything if it's a fault inside the Gonzo box itself. Hopefully it's a wiring issue that you can see and fix.

The "Mikes" ss spokes do have slightly different bends and the necks tend to be a touch longer. Hasn't been an issue for me.

Agree with Gary here. The head of the spokes may not sit perfectly flush on the hub, but won’t create any issues.

K thx. I’ll attempt the transplant today. I’ll fire up the A/C in the garage and start lacing. Busy weekend do I’ll probably leave trying the wheel until early next week. Appreciate the comments.

Question regarding kickstarter springs.
Was about to change the kickstarter spring to a fresh one that I got when I bought my bike. Ended up keeping the stock one as the Yambits aftermarket spring (apparently) is slightly weaker.

Am I supposed to wind it up one rotation more than the position it sits in when I slide the axle on and everything is in its right place? Tried really hard and gave up on that due to lack of helping hands.
Now it's winded a bit more than half a turn and it's not enough to properly return the kickstarter. Sometimes have to lift it.

What's your experience with this?

No, it's quite easy just fit the end into the location and assemble all, making sure nuffin slips out of place and you're good to go.

Just guessing what to do got it in pretty good shape. No dial indicator for me. Just a pair of vise grips, a coat hanger wire and my calibrated eyeball. Now I just need to find a tire for the rim.

I prefere Pictures ... and migthbe the Shaft and the Bushing need some Moly-Grease ...

Nice job. Equally as important as side to side runout, be sure to check your vertical as well. Its a great feeling to look back and appreciate the completed job.

It seems to be running true (enough lol). I still plan to tighten the spokes a bit more before mounting a tire. Maybe 1/16 of a turn on each nipple will give the spokes a better ring tone.

I had lunch with a friend who just did the same to his wheel. He said when he was doing the tightening he was told all spokes should ring with the same tone when struck with a wrench or screwdriver. He said his wheel runs true but the tone of the spokes are not the same. He said on his wheel you can play a nice musical melody.

This brings up the reason I have never tried to spoke a wheel... How do you know when they're the right tightness? Is there a spoke torque wrench? Inquiring minds want to know!


Edit: I did some searching, turns out there is such a thing as a spoke torque wrench!

Like I said, "how tight do I make them" has been the one big reason I've never tried. Might have to get one as well.
