That gave me an ideah IMG_3956[1].JPG nothing is sacred. If only it would have fit over the elephant ears
 
I walked around them, thought about Ruby's brakes but no, Looked and Mallory and shuddered. gathered parts and tools laying around from the last time I worked on then changed my mind. I picked up a "parts lot" a few months back for a buck fiddy which ended up being almost an entire bike so I decided to roll that out and give it a look see. I believe, if I decoded the vin correct, that it's a 79 special and all the tabs are still on it. The guy had planned to chop it but lost interest. It had a baby blue sportster tank and outrageous looking 16" ape hangers installed on a peculiar looking front end. One of yous (I think it might have been Gary) determined that the forks were from a tx500 as was the rear wheel. So I took the tank and side covers from my 77 (which I did chop) and saw how it would look.IMG_3952[1].JPG the side covers don't exactly fit right and the tank seems massive but not too bad IMO. Oh and the swingarm is from the 77 too, this one has a rear drum so that worked out. He had the regular Special wheel and arm installed and the tx wheel was with the other parts. So now I got a roller with a rear brake and the wheels match. Oh and a coat hanger I made out of those apes

But it was a case of American blind justice.
 
I find proper tire lube inside and outside the bead (double the amount you think is enough), along with a tire which has been out in the sun is what works. I’ve never had one not seat correctly doing it with those two requirements fulfilled.

This is exactly what I mean - I am considering ordering replacements, and I have not gotten serious enough yet to figure out how to measure. I saw your post and asked away. Center to center - got it! Thanks.

32 to 32.5cm centre to centre, measured with a steel tape hence the not exact dimension. Hope that helps.
