What have you done to your XS today?

I started my newly acquired 75 project bike for the first time in years. Lotsa years. Bill Johnsen of this forum rebuilt the carbs and although it only runs on the left cylinder because of an electrical problem, it fired and ran after three or so revolutions and ticked along on one jug without the first carb tweek. Nice job Bill. Now if I can sort out the right side.

Haven't found anything disastrous so far. Oil rings have no life left in them, but aren't stuck or broken. A bit of staining on the lh side of the lh cylinder wall - the bike must have been on the side stand during its time off. No perceptible damage there when you run a finger over it, though, and no lip at the top of the cylinder so it might just be a hone and fresh rings, plus a fresh set of valve stem seals. Will get some measurements done by the experts.

It's looked like this for awhile now, but it will get done eventually.🤞 The engine is finally officially set in the frame and now time to build around it.

OK, update on my 75. Finally got a compression tester and found 140 on the left side and 0 on the right. The bike hasn't run since Obama was in office. When I was checking it over waiting on the carbs I found the right side exhaust valve was set at nearly 35 thousandth's so I set it correctly. Could it have been stuck and now it's out of adjustment? When the bike turns over with the starter it sounds like it's wheezing out the right pipe. Joe

Made it to Mark IV on the dash template. I think Mark V should be the money with a little more material hugging the center of the top clamp.

Sold the stock mikunis long ago, until I get a set of VM34s, these intake covers are nicer to stare at than shop rags.

The battery strap that I bought from Yambits is perishing and cracked. It's between one and two years old. I bought it before I realised their rubber components are complete junk. Luckily, I could buy a Yamaha one to replace it. No doubt, the Yamaha rubber part will last longer than I do.

Stuck is a good guess, usually only happens when there's water there. Another possibility is a chunk of carbon stuck on the valve seat. you can know which with a borescope in that plug hole.

Not much time to work today, only tinker. Realized the original mockup for the left side cover was going to interfere with the air filter/cleaner on that side so I made a revision. The original was styled after the aftermarket covers made by BAAK MOTORCYCLES for the modern Bonneville. This one is based off the 60s triumph side covers.
