Finished the top end rebuild for my motor and boxing it up to ship it to the garage where the rest of the bike is for winter storage.

Thanks Jim for the fantastic XS650 Top End Buildup thread and thanks to all who responded to my threads regarding this rebuild.

Let's see; I have stripped, repolished, un-laced &re-laced the front wheel; painted spokes; put a new tire on; rebuilt the front forks, caliper, and master cylinder; polished and painted the exhaust pipes, installed new controls (right side), polished/painted handlebar, painted front half of frame, dug out a box full of mud dauber nests from the cooling fins and polished side cases; am waiting on new brake hoses to complete front end work. After that, next step is yank & rebuild carbs, then take the back end apart. I should be finished by April or thereabouts......

My wife loves it; says I stay the H*** out of her hair and out of the house. I just don't tell her how much I am spending on tools, shop supplies and new parts. Anyway, open a beer, light a cigar, and go polish something........

After I finished boxing up the motor I found a ball bearing on the floor!

Panic attack! :doh::yikes::shootme:

Turned out to be from one of the box’s casters.

Today I rebuilt the petcock and pulled the swingarm to remove the inch of lateral movement. Also corrected some more misrouted wiring. Does anyone have the rear section of frame with all the seat brackets for a hinged seat pre 80,leftover from a hardtail project they want to part with?

Finished lacing the rear wheel, and mounting the tire. Installed new carb kit for never before run stock carbs. Starting 1 step up rich, we'll see where that goes. Not sure where to set the pilot jet. Looking for a ballpark number of turns out... K&N filter, performance pipes. Got the bike all cleaned up from sitting in storage for 6 or so years. Getting ready to pull the front end and re-lace front wheel, and get a new tire on.

Pulled one carby apart to see what I've got cause I couldn't remember the set up the vm34s came with when I bought them. They were sold as a set for the xs but the bike has always run a bit rich and a touch sluggish under 5000rpm. Here's what I found, main jet 185, pilot jet 30, needle jet P5-159, jet needle 6DH4, slide 2.5. After reading a few threads on this forum I think I will order a 180 main jet, a 25 pilot jet and a 6F9 jet needle as this set up is used by quite a few owners and I read the 6DH4 is not ideal. Looking forward to some improvement in performance. I also replaced the leaking cam seal on the left side behind the boyer ignition after cleaning the shaft with a scotchbrite pad.

Looks good. On the wheels, is there a clear coat on the aluminum (non painted) surfaces? My wheels have surface corrosion and I’d like to polish them up. If there’s a heavy coating on them I may just leave them (too much work - lol).
