Just got a xs650 1980, it seems to have a lot of work done to it, besides the ticking I wanted to clean up the electrical system. There's a 3 prong plug that goes to the engine literally right next to ACG cord and chain but on my book it shows only a ACG cord hose there but mine has another big black cord with 3 wires in it (not neutral safety switch) dose anyone know what this is??? Wires orange, gray black.

Three wire harness on the left side of the engine is the TCI pick-up coil.
That's not in my book for some reason, it's completely unplugged, looking it up dose it need to be plugged in if I have a after marketing ignition system or??? And can you please link what it does lol I've been driving my bike for a month and never understood what those extra wires were

i have no idea what that is or how to tell, previous owner died sadly. how do i check?
Please remove the cover off the alternator and show us inside there please. The TCI pick up will be in there.

Please remove the chrome cover from the left side of the camshaft. Points if fitted are in there.

1980 should have TCI ignition, not points. But it might have been converted to points. Thanks.

OK. You have an aftermarket electronic ignition system installed. I don't know the brand. Pamco, perhaps?

Look under the alternator cover and you'll see the TCI pick up on the stator. Follow the wiring to that plug you showed. That is redundant with the ignition you have.

i see it, should i remove it or???? is it better to leave just in case. also is there any difference with electronic ignition system i should know???

It's not hurting to leave the TCI pick up in there. It's not doing anything though. Personally, I'd remove the pick up and wiring and store it away safely.

Please remove the right side chrome cover. The mechanical advance retard system could well need maintenance.

Might be hard to tell but looks clean
