I’m looking for suggestions and advice on what to do with my 85 xs650. I got it off a buddy of mine, he’s had it sitting for 2.5 years. It has Mikuni Carbs, aftermarket tank, and I recently installed new grips and throttle. It runs and drives but seems to backfire out of the left side exhaust after riding it for a while. I thought of hard tailing it, and doing forward controls but not sure on how much work it is. Let me know what y’all think I should do. I’m only a couple hundred buck into this bike at this point.

Clean the carbs. Do a full tune up. Include clean plugs. New is better clean ignition connections look for air leaks at intakes and exhaust pipe s check ign timing with a strobe type. light. If non stock air filters pilot jets may be too lean be sure tank air vent works others may have more helo.

Welcome aboard!
That's not an '85. '83 was the last year for these bikes. The little hoop the rear pegs attach to make it somewhere between a '74 and '79 Give us a shot of the front disc and gauges... and we can prolly narrow that down.

First thing I'd do is clean the carbs and tank out to get it running good.
