In the big bore barrels I have this welded support. Any ideas? Tensioner barrel mod:weld.jpg

Curious. Does the bit in the middle rotate if you try to turn it? Having said that I can't think why it's there. Does the standard chain tensioner still fit in there?
No it doesnt turn. The stock looking tensioner came out of there. I wondered if it was a support if thats an area that can crack in racing use? The engine looks to have had a lot of work 82mm pistons big valve head huge cam etc

Perhaps. I know that cracking around the crankcase studs and crankcase mouths was an issue on highly tuned race engines. As you say, maybe that's another area that suffered on race bikes. The stresses in a big XS motor from sidecar moto X must be off the scale.

Yes the sidecar boys stressed them to the limits

I dont know how Aluminium reacts on stress induced by welding
But had this been steel The drilling of a hole and welding there would have poor chance of reinforcing anything
The weld would reduce fatigue strengt and the hole add a weakness
to varying degree depending on how good the pin fits
But at tight press fit would induce radial stress

?? ?? Perhaps Trying to prevent the Rectangular opening from Distort Shearing off Bolts ?
