O in SW Ontario and My Wife's Car Is In
Brownie points are in order, I think.

Britain being battered by Storm Darragh. Initially, West of the country worst affected. 93mph winds recorded in North Wales this morning. No trains are running in Wales further west than Cardiff. No trains running in SW England beyond Plymouth. Disruption to trains all over Britain due to trees down and also signaling failures linked to the weather.

A Red Warning has been issued for those presently affected western areas - the authorities are asking people not to travel and if possible to stay at home and indoors. As Darragh moves across the country, worst affected areas will be further east. I expect the severity will reduce but the forecast is that there will still be damaging winds.

The other effect of Darragh is high rainfall, on the already saturated ground which has still not drained from the flooding two weeks ago. Widespread flooding expected.

Mrs is at her friend's house - they were booked for a train trip today from Edinburgh to Durham. That would be the East coast main line but they are not going because of the overwhelming likelihood of disruption as the day goes on. I just hope she can travel home again safely later today.

STORM DARRAGH - WALES

Once again Wales is taking a battering from very inclement weather.
Storm Darragh hit last night with winds exceeding 90MPH around the Welsh coast line.
Central Government sent out text warnings to over 1 million mobile users stating people should stay home aftermidnight last night.
I attended a 21st Birthday meal for my Granddaughter last night and the winds and rain were heavy at 6.00pm.
On the way home at 10.00pm we passed this fallen tree.

Traffic this morning was minimal; and many businesses remain closed for the day.

Unnaturally mild. Has been for a couple of days now. And will be even milder over the next few days. Tomorrow, the day is forecast to start at 14°C and then gradually warm up even further.

Yesterday morning as I walked across Douglas Bridge in Galashiels, some random man says to me 'I don't bloody believe it!' Not sure what he was on about, then saw he was looking at the helmet I was carrying. 'It's WINTER! My bikes have been tucked up in the garage for months!'

'I try to keep riding right through the year
' I told him, 'Mind you, might not have come out if it had been teeming down. Or freezing cold.'

Doesn't feel natural, this mild in mid December.

Well here in Central New York at 6:14PM it's 41ºF outside!

I spent much of yesterday afternoon working on a 60 year old Ariens snowblower. It is the third running one in my collection. Just needs to have the cutting edge drilled and installed.

I have snow blown the driveway three or four times this season, not that any of the times did it really need it but had contractors coming to work on master bath and was just trying to nice to them. 24 hours after each time 90% of the snow was gone!

The stone quarry up the road that I retired from in 2015 is still running today, when I worked there the normal last day of production was usually the Wednesday before Thanksgiving!

Pi$$in’ down relentlessly
Oh Lordy when will the freakin’ rain stop ☔
Well, if its any consolation, it pissed rain here as well this afternoon. Now we have essentially ice driveways with a 1/2' of rain on top. I need to engage the four-wheel drive on my pickup just to get out of the driveway, which is completely flat, no slope at all!

A rare day off today. 9:00am Dropped Mrs C off to help out at the Christmas do at the retirement home for Old Age Pensioners….
I washed the pick-up truck which was filthy. Drove to the local retail park (mall) and it took 40 minutes to find a parking spot! Rain started coming down. Went to the shop to buy Mrs C present; “sorry sold out”.

Drove to Cardiff, an hour away, and spent the whole afternoon trapesing the shops for pressie in the freaking rain. What a waste of time, nowt to buy. Soaking wet got back to the truck; 2 hours later through monsoon rain I arrived home. Truck now filthier than before.

Put the Refuse bins out & recycling. Back in the house, remove sodden clothes, and poor a large one. Phone rings and Mrs C needs a pick up; all the OAP’s are wasted (pissed) and Mrs C is knackered. Back out to the truck.

9:00pm now Just sat down sippin’ the Jameson.

12 hours of shitty rain and no gain.

Christmas……. humbug!

Typical central Alberta day here. Heavy snow coming down sideways in the wind when I got up @ 5:00am.
Still coming straight down lightly now. was -24 Celcius. think it's a bit warmer now. Have about another 6-7" of the white stuff to make it look rather Yule- ish. Have filled the bird feeder twice. Damn near needs an air traffic controller on it. Juncos,Nut hatches,Blue jays,Rose breasted finches,Chickadees ,Magpies, English sparrows and Downy wood peckers took ownership of the suet block. On the upside all the tire shops are making a fortune swapping on snow tires that have doubled in price overnight.

Sounds familiar, me being in Montreal. Here, the -24 C typically occurs after a snowstorm, when a cold high-pressure air mass clears the clouds. Interesting array of bird-life you have there. We get most of those plus Cardinals, but no sparrows or finches. We also have a good population of owls, not on the feeders of course; Snowy, Saw-whet and Barred owls

The owls are spectacular birds to observe. A lot of Snowy Owls just N. of town. Have a couple of Horned owls
nest each year in a big spruce. Have actually listened to only that pair on occasion hunt cats at night by mimicking a
low growl of a cat looking for a fight. Then dropping out of the trees when one comes to investigate. Never ever
would have believed that was possible. Glad there were 4 of us that saw it sitting around the fire to confirm we hadn't had too many wobbly pops. We hardly ever see Cardinals out here. A lot of Waxwings though.

Indeed...although they are considered nocturnal, they are also quite active during the day. Was watching a rabbit at the far end of the yard and along comes this silent flying form out of the trees and poof!... no more rabbit. Happened in the blink of an eye. One night, several Barred Owls had gathered in the pines along the driveway. They were making such a racket that it got me out of bed to investigate. They were completely undeterred by the flashlight I was using to spot them. they just sat there screeching at one another for a good 10 minutes, and then flew off.
