Well, new year but still the same old weather! Today is mild, predicted high 7°C that's about 44°F? Very damp. in fact pouring with rain right now. Washing the roads.
But as soon as dry weather arrives, temps will be likely to fall and the salt trucks will be oot again.
Just listened to a interesting program about the shipping forecast which is now 100 years old. For them as don't know, the BBC Radio 4 shipping forecast, broadcast twice every day on LW gives a very concise and formalised synopsis of met conditions for thirty-one named areas, covering the seas around Great Britain and the approaches, more than a million square miles. For each sea area, the forecast gives wind direction, strength, temperature, visibility and outlook.
The litany of sea area names, the formal reports, read carefully by a BBC announcer, well, it's almost like poetry and much loved by many landlubbers who in most cases probably don't know where Dogger, Fisher, German Bight or Fitzroy are and might not have any personal interest that SW winds, 4 to 5, are backing S later but nonetheless take comfort and joy from the shipping forecast. Even in these days of weather apps on phones, the service is apparently still very useful to seafarers, particularly fishermen and coastal traffic. I love it.
