Just got a ‘79 xs650 project bike. Motor has no wiring, coils, etc. Need to get it running first before I start customizing. I’ve been seeing all different options for wiring and such. What’s the most cost effective route to get what I need. Thinking I want a PMA in the future. Thanks for the help.

Run power to the starter to verify you have compression.
It will be necessary upon decision making time or now even for good replies to be a bit more specific as which 79 model you have. There were 3 in 79 .
Special (double disc & mag wheels) Special II (spoked wheels & rear drum) and Standard (spoked wheels and more standard body etc)
Each model has slightly different wiring harness requirements.

If the front wheel is a 19" and the rear is an 18" then it's a standard. If the rear is a 16" then it's a Special II. Welcome aboard.
Why do you want a PMA? Is your charging system missing? The XS650 alternator is very robust if you start with a rewound rotor. It can outlive you.
I wonder if a poll would say anything about the PMA. Seeing the questions on here leads me to believe they’re troublesome. Perhaps they aren’t.

Compare what you have on here https://www.xs650.com/threads/xs650...orkshop-manuals-tech-information-links.30569/ with the Frame. Rear peg mounts are the tell if it is a Standard or Special. Mags or Spoke wheels will differentiate between the 2 79 Specials.
