Why did I wait so long??!

Ok, Im out pulling all the old points plate, advancing unit & rod, coils, etc out of my newfound love...the 75, in anticipation of the new Boyer Bransen thats due here Friday.

Since Im going through the electrical system (which all actually looks to be in very good nick, with the exception of the points), do you folks have a lot of faith in leaving the old original regulator and rectifier in the system?

Im having Jim spin me up a new rotor as a preventative measure, should I swap out the reg /rec as a preventative measure too?

Or should I stick to the old motto, "If it aint broke, dont fix it"?

Thoughts @Jim ?

Oh, also...PS, who's a good source for new Carbon Brushes now days?
I get my brushes from XS650direct here in Canada. I must have lucked out when I got this 76 of mine. Other than the brushes the charging system is original.
cleaned up the V regulator points once. The old beast still puts 14.5 V out . Now that I've said this the whole damn system will have a Lucas moment!

I went through the adjust routine on the regulator on my 77 and finally kludged in an early 70s AMC regulator. VR115 IIRC. I still rely on the OEM rectifier. An inconspicuous$10 DVM velcroed to your handle bar center will keep you updated on your charging system health. This is ~3/4" x 1.5".

My battery internally shorted a couple months ago from vibrations on my Harley Road King and that prompted me to install one of those exact voltage meters on my dash from that point forward.

It works very well, great peace of mind.

Lucas moment, thats funny...lol.

This bikes functioning just fine, checked it all with a meter at different RPM's charges and maintains just fine.

Its just the damn retired Aircraft Maintainer in me that gets into these preventative maintenance loops. Its like well if Im upgrading this, I may as well do this....I believe Jim called it "Mission Creep" last time I did this.

The points looked pretty well pitted, so thats where it all started.

Regarding preventative maintenance v If it ain't broke don't fix it, I had similar thoughts on my 77 650D. I decided in the end to remove all the 50 year old electronics on the basis that the bike would be less likely to leave me by the roadside if I did. Luckily my alternator was all good so I just replaced the rectifier and regulator along with new brushes. The originals are boxed up. Here's what I used, eBay rectifier and Lucas regulator. There's more choice of regulators in the USA.

I also fitted a Boyer Bransden ignition kit which works well. More thoughts from me on that -

Well....shit.

Received my Boyer today and good old Quality Assurance missed another one. It would very much appear that one of the two timing posts is very crooked.

I'm quite certain this isnt by design and will have me on hold for at least another week for a replacement from vendor, or longer if from Boyer themselves?

Farthest away post in this pic:

If I'm not mistaken, @Mailman got a bad Boyer board, emailed 'em and got a replacement without any fuss.

Yeah, I saw that with the missing solder on Mailman's posting, that's why I inspected mine extra close as well...glad I did.

The vendor on eBay is sending me a new one as we speak. He says he has great warranty exchange with Boyer. He's a great seller, responds to messages and ships very, very quickly...not his fault by any means.

Ok,
I got my replacement Boyer board today and it appears worse than the first one?! Both poles are crooked and theres corrosion all over the back side like it was a past warranty item sitting on a shelf, dunno?

Am I just being too picky of a bastard? Should I just not be looking at these before install? Are they all like this?

I've not seen any like that. The corrosion would concern me.
I would send pics to the seller again.
Same here. Send 'em pics and go from there.
I'm guessing the timing between cylinders would be off with 'em crooked.

Yeah, that is a no go. I've never priced these but guessing they aren't cheap. The posts may work but isn't this supposed to be a premium product. Shipping rusty parts as new, who does that. I'm over it.

I did send pics to seller again, Im sure he's thrilled with me at this point...no matter how apologetic I have been about being a pain. :(

He said hes sold literally hundreds of these and Im the first to complain about this, ever.

Also said they wont hit the magnetic poles....I told him contact wasnt my concern.

My concern is about timing and synchronization between cylinders, I.E. increased vibration, etc.

I will if seller and I cant resolve this. He's been a very stand up guy so far.

He said he's gonna straight edge another and go from there.

I explained I only straight edged to get it to show up on photos, but its visible to the naked eye.

Question remains...if the eBay seller is not the manufacturer. Then Boyer is selling him bad parts. Is this a boyer manufacturing problem

I don't know sh!t how international distributers work but perchance this ONLINE seller is a small time merch online retailer and working hard to protect his/her 4.8/5.0 rating.
