Will’s xs650 build

I've used both Uni's and K&N's on various projects over the years. Uni's are so much more convenient to service. With the oiled gauze (K&N) type you run the risk during cleaning of shifting the fibers of the gauze and creating openings large enough for larger sizes of grit to enter.
I've heard/read here that the most convenient K&N that fits easily astride the frame backbone tube are the tapered ones, that appear to have a more detrimental effect on air flow. Foam filters just flex aside.
When I got my new V-Rod back in 2004, the popular go to was the K&N, HD Screaming Eagle and Amsoil, all of which were an oiled fiber filter. I checked with Uni and at the time they didn't offer one, but I kept bugging the rep and when they did he sent me a free unit along with a service kit, cleaner and spray oil, with the request that I spread the word. I was happy to oblige on the popular forum through the years.
I finally noticed last year, after 19 years of continuous service that the foam was beginning to deteriorate and have replaced it with another new Uni. This one will probably out live me.

The carbs are Mikuni Kogyo 54mm. Thanks, Will
Those will make you waaaay over-carbureted. A stock XS will be quiet happy anywhere between 32 to 38mm.
Even a hot rodded engine will be happy at 38-40mm.

RE: the pleated K&N's, they create turbulence that the "constant velocity" carbs don't like. Something like a Mikuni VM carb will be quiet happy with 'em.

I had tapered K&N on standard carbs and inlet boots, even then the filters needed a bit of ‘manipulation’ to fit around the frame backbone.

Sounds good I’m going to stick with UNI filters. Thanks

Is there any differences in starter solenoids for a Yamaha 650cc? I’ve got an extra solenoid from my 1984 Yamaha Moto 4 250cc and wanted to know if that would possibly work on the bike? If not is there a good aftermarket solenoid I could get at a shop near me? Hoping to get the bike started tomorrow but I completely forgot to get a solenoid😂
