win some, lose some -- 1971 XS1B

Oh yeah, one more thing I maybe need -- when ya'll are building an engine to look nice, do you routinely use the shiny fastener kits?
Yes, for no more than they cost, why wouldn't you?

William, in the interest of honest titles, you need to change yours to "win some, win some...." :sneaky:

For the clutch cover and left side I get stainless kits.
Be aware the 2 bolts for the strainer in the clutch cover are shorter in a 256 cover than a 447 cover. It's not a lot but sometimes I've had to add a washer to get it to seal.

They look to be the same ones I used in my XS2, as shown here, they worked really well.

Yes, that's what I've been getting now. Haven't used any yet but I'm pretty confident they'll be good and work well. I don't recommend the bolt kits from Mike's, the chrome is poor and won't last long. I swap in used better originals for the acorn nuts, usually stainless for the various screws.

And as mentioned, the screws used in the right cover are shorter on the early bikes .....

Yes, I used the gasket kit too.
And since the thread kinda turned to fastener bling, well here ya go lol! Yup stainless & chrome everywhere.
Carbs being gone through tomorrow. I might even finish the exhaust and put that on too lol.
Thing is the engine is complete but it’s up stairs in the XS engine room 😅
Tri Cities WA is quite known for wind & dust so in the room it lives for now .
Our local baseball team is the “Dust Devils” 🌪️

Thanks for all of the fastener info.

Well this sucks. One of the oil rings is missing from one of the Cruizin Image piston ring kits. I just emailed them. Updates as they come (or don't).

Not yet. Every day I ask myself why I'm doing this. I kind of feel how I think Gary must've felt when he started his "Home market tx650 going to SOIR" project. Remember, no title, cracked frame, stuck motor. When I discovered all that, my original thought was Part-Out. Not sure how/why my mind changed.

Because you like a challenge? There are no earlys that you find that are going to be easy or cheap to get running well enough to be called a dependable daily rider. Or any year XS650s for that matter. Just some are easier and cheaper than others.

My xs2 was super easy!!! Mailman did all the work hahaha.

I just got an email from Cruizin Image in Japan, and they are going to ship out my missing piston oil ring on Monday, so that's good.

Also, I got the very last 70-73 cam chain from https://yamahaxs650.com/
so that's good too.
I'm patiently waiting to see results from last month's yamahaxs650.com "purchasing trip." I assume they are going to wait for everything they ordered to be completed, and then ship it all one time in a single container, so may be a while.
