hi folks earl here co mayo ireland. i have a 1980 XS650S{F} . i am in the process of rewiring, using a harness supplied by dime city 24/6596. this harness is very simplified, no light checker, no reserve lighting , no safety relay no flasher. it also has a pamco electronic ignition system . does anyone have a wiring diagram to suit this configuration? i have one from jerry heiden but its a bit vague.atb earl

cheers ww i looked at those but im hoping someone has a record of exactly how to wire in the harness i have, headlamp has about 5 plugs in ffs. mayo well wrecked btw, great firewood though. atb earl
Several posts about electrics and Pamco in the tech section.

I rewired an 1980 XS 650 SE last summer
Bought the best fitting new harness I could find ... I almost had to throw in the Towel

You could start by putting up a link to the harness you bought
And to the Heiden info you have

Hi Earl, welcome to the forum. Mayo is a beautiful part of the world. Sorry to hear about the storm damage - we had lots of trees down during Eoywn but I believe Ireland had a lot worse.

In my limited experience there is no real substitute for understanding your bike's wiring. With no light checker etc there is a lot less there. Think of the electrics as a number of systems - charging, five wires from the alternator to the regulator and rectifier to the battery. Then you have battery to fuse box to ignition switch, then the ignition system - coil(s) and Pamco. Lights, brake lights, horn. With no flasher, that's just about it?

Could take the seat and tank off and drape the harness over the bike and start thinking about what needs to connect to each component. Even if Heiden's diagram is a bit vague, it should provide some guidance?

Photos always help, so when you get stuck, not that you will, put up photos of the relevant area and suggestions will be forthcoming. Cheers, Raymond

hello jan thanks for your help. i got the harness from dime city cycles xs650 european item no 24/6596. its also on jerry heidens site, same part no plus a wiring diagram. problem is the diagram is a bit confusing. i also got a tip from winged wheel about clearer diagrams in the tech section. i think i will unwrap the new harness i have and use the best of the diagrams and the heiden one. also raymond has sent me a home made diagram which looks clear and very useable. im handy on the spanners but i absolutely hate electrics but diy it is because here in mayo there is hardly anyone who understands this stuff, they have all emigrated! just old geezers like me left !

hi raymond thanks very much for the pm, gentleman. i will use that plus a diagram from the tech section i think and give it a go. about 2 wires a week to keep my sanity. you are right about the heiden diagram, it does provide some guidance, i got the back end all done ok, colours match and all but getting the front end sorted looks tricky. atb earl

IMG_2815.pngIMG_2814.pngOnce you get into the diagram and understand color, where the wires go and how it’s set up it really gets easier. Also here’s a routing diagram. It helped me bunches.

1st question is the bike a US import or Euro model............look for your model here
https://www.xs650.com/threads/xs650...-other-information-including-xs750-850.30569/

if it is a US import it will b a Factory TCI model. No points....XS650SG or G. There is a major difference between the US 80 SG and G model

If it is a Euro model it will have points. Euro 80-83 models have a SE code. points model with a separate regulator and rectifier

These diagrams are for a US 80-83 simplified diagram. These have a combined SS Reg/Rect
here are the individual circuits + all of them combined into a full diagram

hello mr skull good to meet you. thanks for your reply. my engine number is 3L1/002221, frame number matches. i referenced a table here somewhere and this bike appears to be a 650s[f} i think the f denotes the year 1979/80 euopean model standard bike. no fuse box and a loop frame part for the rear footpeg , no tci, it was points but now a pamco.i have printed off several wiring diagrams now and i intend to do a sort of copy of raymonds simplified one, its already beginning to make sense. didnt do much with it since monday, slipped over in duckshit collecting eggs, i dont bounce like i used to.atb earl

Hope you didn't break the eggs.
came back in , washed off the shit, ate the eggs. class food. true story, recently we have been tormented with rats robbing the duck food. traps dont work, poison too risky, see one rat you just know there are another twenty. looked on youtube and found a method to get them . make up a mix of cake mix from the supermarket, vanilla works best, and bicarbonate of soda. 50/50. harmless to everything except rats and mice. they eat the mix, it hits their guts and the bicarb reacts and produces co2. they cant fart or belch. it blows up their guts, havnt seen a rat now for weeks. rural ireland.

Rented an old farm house years ago, loved it there. Many acres of beans, corn and wheat around the house. Healthy big rats out there. In the winter a few brave ones would get into the house. I put poison tablets under the kitchen floor for them. Once in a while we could barely smell a dead one, but that wouldn't last long, smell would be gone once they dried up.

Happy wire
tba happy wiring???? just been doing bits of it. p.i.a. i intend to wire it super simple. the handbook appears to contradict every which way, so im thinking f it its going to be without idiot lights in the tacho/speedo , indicators [maybe later] reserve lighting etc. ps mr skull did i correctly identify my bike ? atb earl

the bastard things were running around up in the roof, the bicarb has worked, killed a whole nest of them im sure, also the remains dont poison the rest of the wildlife. they are dangerous things. a farmer lad here got weils disease a few years back, paralyzed in a few hours and was lucky to survive . rat piss. atb earl
