hi raymond are the colours on your diagram your choice or a copy of the originals? atb earl
It's a good question, Earl, but eeeeaaayyyaachhhh I couldn't really give you a straight answer so I'd have to say the colours are what they are. Sort of based on the wiring I pulled out, so I use black for earth/ground throughout. Seems sensible therefore for battery +ve to be red to the fuse box/ignition switch. Thereafter used red/white or red/sommat else for feed from there to lights or whatever. Sometimes probably same as what I pulled out but also what came to hand among the assorted flavours of tracer wires I had bought.

Mention of which, if you want to do any wiring yourself even adapting a harness you ought to have some basic tools and supplies. A good snipper to cut wires, wire stripper, crimping tool if yer going down that route, connectors, loads of types are available, harness tape, heat shrink, scissors, a multimeter is well handy. Bits n bobs.

hi raymond cheers for that. my bike does not have a fuse box, does it matter? all the bits and bobs you mention i have ready to go. i have been stripping off the covering from the new harness today to give me a clear as possible picture of end to end. colours will match a bit. i was back and forth to dumfries many times btw when i was working most enjoyable, looks a bit like mayo. atb earl

. . . my bike does not have a fuse box, does it matter? . . .
No, it don't matter for getting it working. But if out & about you get a short circuit or whatever, without a fuse, the current surge will probably set the cable on fire. It's pretty easy to add a fuse box or even put a few strategically placed individual fuses.

Wiring my Royal Enfield Bullet, I solved the fuse box question by this lazy expedient - snip a feed cable, strip back insulation both sides, crimp an insulated blade on both ends, insert a blade fuse - voila!

That's something I'm going to certainly remember. The earlier 650's had just a 20amp main fuse. That blows, you have a dead motorcycle. I already rewired the ignition circuits with a 10amp fuse and relay. Taking your suggestion, it's very simple to add a couple more strategically placed fuses. Thanks for the idea.

OKAY, so how many of you gentlemen noticed my deliberate error? Not!

Shoulda read crimp an insulated female blade socket on both ends.

progress harness tape stripped off, now i can see clearly what goes where, clearing a little. inline fuses tba. super simple plan, it will be raymonds diagram minus flashers just to get me going maybe add them later. doesnt matter much here , i am very rural, furthermore i am so old i dont gaf anyway. 1st bike for me was a triumph tiger cub in 1968. not much wiring on that ! found a dead rat today by my front door, great big one stinking the doorway out whenever anyone came in . the mrs was a bit miffed. cakemix rocks!

Photos, Earl. Preferably the bike, not the rat . . .
more progress. lots of joining, soldering, studying. all hooked up, temporary, battery fitted and switched on. did NOT catch fire, did not blow the 20 amp fuse. well chuffed.i am using the diagram suggested by raymond, this with the other diagrams for sort of reference is getting clearer. got the lights working now and the starter, the other bits to follow. much appreciate your advice and diagram raymond, cheers. i posted photos ?? gone now?

next query. the horn is now working ok, just. if i take it off the bike it sounds good, when i bolt it on it sounds crap?? any ideas anyone?

the bastard things were running around up in the roof, the bicarb has worked, killed a whole nest of them im sure, also the remains dont poison the rest of the wildlife. they are dangerous things. a farmer lad here got weils disease a few years back, paralyzed in a few hours and was lucky to survive . rat piss. atb earl
The bi-Carb method does work effectively; until one of the bastards died under the floorboards of the bedroom / above the lounge ceiling. Had to lift the carpet and floors to get to the sodding thing which was a stinking putrid corpse. God did I gag getting the bastard out. 🤮

me too. i had one in the roof space, i had to cut a hole in the ceiling to get it out, mingin even the seagulls wouldnt take it. t waited about 3 days and put it in the shite tank.

lights now working, starter, horn and best of all sparks. flasher unit is u/s new one ordered with jerry heiden plus a couple of bits. looking good. i even understand it now, mostly??? next up is a set of inline fuses. result. cheers for the help lads.

nearly there now, still smoking but doable somehow. cheers lads.

hi everyone. update. wiring complete, it all works, well pleased. im fairly sure the battery is u/s though. starts ok on the button but doesnt run for long then will hardly turn over, however then will start on the kickstart. smokes like a bastard [wet plugs],poor spark despite electronic ignition system. sparks should be bright and fat[ saw it years ago]. does anyone know will a new battery cure the weak sparks? i ha about 13 volts in this battery, cant measure the amps?? also is the excessive smoking a symptom of poor combustion due to crap battery? atb earl

To grab at just one of your questions, what kind of smoke is it? Most bikes smoke after a rebuild, burning off oil used in assembly, can be quite a reek, but typically doesn't last for very long. Or you could have oil smoke due to something not right such as leaking valve guides. But if it's petrol smoke, often called black smoke, often stinks of petrol then yes could be due to poor combustion which can result from crap battery or other causes. HTH?

hi raymond hows it going? all good here. smoke is pale colour, spark plugs smell a bit of unburnt fuel. valve guides were ok i think when i was rebuilding, a very small bit of sideways play but i thought ok. new valve stem oil seals fitted as well, new pistons also, bores ok however its been a very long process, elderly parents taking up a lot of my time [all done now]. i had the battery on charge for a week or more but it wont take a full charge it seems so im sure its ducked. vm 34 carbs btw from jerry heiden, atb e
