How's the battery? How's the voltage at the ignition coils? It all needs to be 100% or you're never going to have a fat blue spark.
battery is u/s. showing 13/14 volts but wont turn engine over. used jump leads and she started up straight away, however the 2nd battery also u/s .old. new battery to be ordered . i will check voltage at ignition coil when the battery arrives. im hoping its ok because wiring is new, stripped down system , guided by raymond a few months ago.

Ignition switch and kill switch can cause significant voltage drop to the coils. From memory, I gained around 0.6v by cleaning the kill and ignition switches on my 650D. There's good write ups in the forum how to do those jobs.

thanks for your kind advice. new battery to do , ignition switch strip and clean, stop switch is not wired in. cautious optimism??? atb earl

New loom but all the switches and pigtails are still 40 years old. Take them apart, check wiring, clean contacts, especially ignition and stop switch and connecters. Do a continuity test before and after.
thanks all. battery on the way, i`ll keep you posted.

hi all new battery fitted, voltage good turns over nicely. new coil fitted plus new leads, caps, plugs. still spark looks poor, not fat and blue more like small and blue. ignition switch stripped and cleaned [it was in good nick] earth cables good and clean, 12volts reading at the coil?? i will start it up in the near future. also i wonder if the charging system is ok i fitted a voltmeter fed off the brown wire [horn] . volts look ok atb earl

i will check both when i run the motor in the next couple of days. visitors, paddys day etc, also weather is mental and i must run up outside because of the smoke??

hi folks... voltage about 12.2 running. electrics now seem ok. my 8 bucks chinese voltmeter is ace. just been out for a test ride , a bit misfiring up to about 2000rpm but clears a bit about 3000. smoking reduced bigly, i think maybe it has been residual crap in the exhaust system?? checked plugs , very black. rich. vm 34s, 185 main jet 30 pilot, needle groove 2 down from top. mixture screw 1 turn out. shall i drop the needle or step down 1 pilot size? cheers all. 2.20 euros /litre diesel , 2.00 euros/litre petrol. haulier lads are going after the government big time.

1980 XS650S{F} with aftermarket wiring.
Next up is measuring the rotor ohms should be 5.2 to 5.9 ohms let the meter settle for bit the reading tends to drop for several seconds
Then check you ahve good ground on brush and +12 on the other.
Then ohm the three white stator leads they should all be IIRC about an ohm +-

thanks ggg. will check later. how do i check the rotor? atb e

Measure resistance between the two copper rings with a meter. As per post above, resistance should be ~5 ohms across the copper rings. Check the carbon brushes while you're there I would say. HTH.
hi ggg voltage is 13.4 at the brush, 5.4 ohms across the copper rings on the rotor, about 1.0 between the 3 white wires. atb earl. ps with a good ground on the other brush. my alternator is the earlier type by the way. e.

hi lads me again. new brushes now fitted, just did a test ride , a good bit less smoke but no more than 12.3 volts showing on my new voltmeter. im wondering about getting rid of the vr and rectifier. heiden have a modern replacement for them. ggg said i should be seeing about 14 volts at 1500 rpm, im not. maybe the lack of volts is contributing to poor sparks? or is it a tired alternator? atb earl
